Looked at the thread, very interesting discussion.
I guess Rent is ok for 12 year olds nowadays, but there is no way I would have understood a lot of it when I was 12, and my parents wouldn't have allowed me to see it. They were mad when I took my 13 year old sister to it a couple years ago.

L - I do not have permission from my wife yet. I assume that C12 would be cleared.
Not for all 12 year olds. I would not take a neice or nephew. That would be their parent's choice.

And I've taken many of the kids from my temple, 6th-8th graders. I'm surprised when their parents allow them to see Rent, Ave Q, and rated R movies.
