It's always very sad when someone whose work you admire so very much says something so absurd and painfully misguided.
Apart from the obvious problems with attributing the concerns about the last two years nominations of only white actors to anti-white racism, one has to wonder about Rampling's lack of empathy in suggesting that it's possibly the consequence of actors of color not deserving to have been nominated.
One would think that if anyone in the world should personally realize that not being nominated for an oscar has nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of a performance, it would be Rampling. A woman who up until this year was in my and many others's estimation the greatest living film actor to have never been nominated for an oscar - or more accurately, tying with the current and continuing holder of that distinction, Isabelle Huppert.

Well said, Henrik.
For those who don't know Rampling's work, here is one of my all-time favorite scenes from, well, anything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKTrR260rBI

And no one has even mentioned Swimming Pool, perhaps her greatest role.
I just love her. I'm disappointed in her, but I still admire her work.

Like several of you, I admire her work on screen. Her remarks were unfortunate regardless of the context but she's human.
I still consider myself very much a work in progress. For that reason and on account of her age and origin, I'm willing to cut her some slack. After all, she hails from a nation that clings to a peerage system. If I recall correctly, her name is styled Charlotte Rampling, OBE, across the pond. Hopefully, she'll learn to check her privilege in the States and stick to her written lines on a page going forward.

I agree with Rampling that nominations should not be based on race. The bigger problem is that there aren't enough strong roles for actors of color. When there are, they get nominated and often win. I don't believe that, for the most part, nominators go in thinking, "I don't want anyone of color." I do think it's a shame that Straight Outta Compton didn't grab one of the two open slots for Best Picture but I don't believe it's because the cast is largely Black. Maybe they didn't warm up to the subject matter, as they didn't with the largely White film "Black Mass" and many others that were left out.

I think a good portion of the nominating body refused to watch Straight Outta Compton. though. Several interviewed for an EW article said they didn't.
