Charlotte Rampling managed to piss off every reasonable person in the universe - even earning the public wrath of Chelsea Clinton - with her pretty ignorant and inartful remarks on race which all but certainly will kill her chances at Oscar gold. Her comments read like something straight out of Mr. R's regular contributions to this board. Ah, the elderly.
But, then, Robert De Niro's Dirty Grandpa was released to universal pans and some of the worst reviews in, well, the history of film journalism, not to mention several feature length reports on, well, the total collapse of his image as a film icon, like this one from The Telegraph titled "Who Told Robert De Niro He Was Funny". I'm especially fond of the 'Critics Consensus' from Rotten Tomatoes:
Like a Werther's Original dropped down a sewer drain, Dirty Grandpa represents the careless fumbling of a classic talent that once brought pleasure to millions.
I guess De Niro's publicist at least knew what was coming..

Rampling is now saying she was "misinterpreted".
Maybe it's all part of an elaborate plan to actually drum up interest in the Oscars.

I really do feel like she was misquoted or something. The quotes that they use seem a little jarring.

Well I agree a performance should not be based on race. And nor do I think that the Oscars should fill a "quota" based on race. It's just the best of the year as deemed by the Academy. That's it. Sorry Will Smith, they didn't like your movie this year. Sorry "Straight Out of Compton" they didn't deem it worthy of a Best Picture or any acting noms. That's just how it all shook out this year.

It sure would be terrific if defensive white people could find a way to stop introducing these themes to the narrative! Nobody has suggested any of those things. THANKS Charlotte and Michael Cane and Julie Delpy!

It's just the best of the year as deemed by the Academy.
ONE MORE TIME: Wide majority white, wide majority male, median age 63 Academy.
Bias, conscious or not, excludes people not like them. In fact, look at the demographics of the one actor nominated from a film about black people's lives, "Creed." White, male, old.
Can we see how bias, conscious or un-, influences this whole effing process? No? Stallone was the ONLY person in that movie giving a nominatable performance? Why not white man with camera, too?

I am so worn out by explaining privilege or clarifying the difference between institutional racism and individual acts of prejudice or showcasing how bias is real and present in virtually every aspect of our lives. I just can't bother with people who STILL don't get it in 2016. So, cheers to you, Namo, for having the patience to refute these ridiculous falsehoods over and over again. Who had ever even heard of Charlotte Rampling before she was nominated then said those racist things? I doubt she even has a publicist, let alone one who is having a bad week.

Rampling is one of the most respected actors working in films today. She works mainly in foreign films but most film lovers and certainly everyone in the industry are aware of her and her talent.
Just because she hasn't starred in a superhero movie doesn't mean she's not well known.
I'm a big fan of her work but I confess that comment has definitely bothered me.
I tried to understand what she meant, but even having been misinterpreted she sounds oblivious to the obvious. I think she shares the same misguided belief as Dave19 that we're living in a 100% post-racial society. Which just underlines how out of touch she is with the reality of the industry.
Maybe it's European thing, they seem to have difficulty grasping how ingrained (i.e. institutionalized) racism is here in America.
Anyway, I'm deeply disappointed.

White Europeans have never fully understood the complicated history of race relations in America; as such, when they try to discuss it, their comments are frequently less than artful. The recent statements by Rampling, Delpy, and Caine reflect this very strongly.

"People often complain that we do not have real discussion about race in USA. Well Meaning people on all sides try and are misunderstood and it turns into fire. White Americans are aware of this and Europeans of course are not. If you think that is silly, how much do Americans know about the history of these countries? Orc an even place them on a map?
Brigitte Bardot actually was convicted in court a few times in France back in the 90s for Hate Speech when she complained about Muslims trying to change the French way of life.

You said Europeans do not have a true understanding of America Race Relations and say clumsy things. I was agreeing with you, and added that it is understandable, as we have less understanding of their cultures and most Americans cannot fill out a world map. Also, the type of reaction Delpy, Rampling, Caine etc is in my opinion why a lot of well meaning American Whites do not like discussing race as it often turns into fire.
President Obama has said similiar statements, that it hurts, not helps, when people giving opinions that are maybe not popular or not different are shouted down.by those who do not agree. Though he was mainly speaking about College Campus

It's always very sad when someone whose work you admire so very much says something so absurd and painfully misguided.
Apart from the obvious problems with attributing the concerns about the last two years nominations of only white actors to anti-white racism, one has to wonder about Rampling's lack of empathy in suggesting that it's possibly the consequence of actors of color not deserving to have been nominated.
One would think that if anyone in the world should personally realize that not being nominated for an oscar has nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of a performance, it would be Rampling. A woman who up until this year was in my and many others's estimation the greatest living film actor to have never been nominated for an oscar - or more accurately, tying with the current and continuing holder of that distinction, Isabelle Huppert.
