Somehow I just think there's more to the story as to why rents are going up in the city than this one.
Don't ask me why. It's just a quirky feeling.

More to the story other than greedy people trying to make as much money and have the most toys when they die? Doubt it.
I think the secret Harvard/Yale society richies who are running everything want Manhattan to themselves, so they're carving the island into one big luxury playground by building tons of ugly high rise condos and evicting anyone who isn't a billionaire. In 20 years, the city will be swathed in glass towers and from space it will look like one of those needle beds.

So Goth, if the NY Times has a LIBERAL bias, why did they report this story about a LIBERAL congressman's malfeasance?
Please answer this for me.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 12:06pmMarket rents go up because demand and occupancy are high and people are willing to pay it. When people get fed up with the neighborhood or find better deals elsewhere, they move out, occupancy drops, and so do market rents. Usually, so does the quality of the neighborhood. It happens everywhere. It's why I left my neighborhood when I did. Market rents were going through the roof and I found a great opportunity to buy in a neighborhood that is on the verge of exploding. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Please notice that it is not a front page story, but rather in the Metro section, along with stories about tourists getting lost at the Bronx Zoo and longer walks to Starbucks. Technically, it should be front page news because what he's done is illegal.

thing about manhattan is, mr. matt, it's going to take a lot for rents to ever go down. granted, bloomy's doing his best to return us to the bad old days, but it'll take a massive event to drive prices here down. at all. eventually empty overpriced apartments could bring rents down marginally, but i doubt it. there's too many people who make too much money who want a manhatan apartment for it to come down.

A certain poster is of the opinion that anyone who disses a show must be a "bitter queen who doesn't live in Manhattan" madbrain.
Joek was the recipient of that presumptuous judgment.

The ONLY time I have seen rents go down in Manhattan in my 35 years of living here was right after 9/11 and then it was only in the apartments around the World Trade Center. In every economic distress, we have had apartment rents stay the same though they may go empty for a while. Landlords warehouse them , knowing that the economy will rebound eventually. They figure if they lower them it will take that much longer to get them up to market value when the economy improves.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 12:52pmInteresting theory Goth. NY Times actually broke this story; They uncovered it and were the first to report it. Why would they do that, even if it was "Buried" on the front of the local section. Why not just ignore it and fill that space with more Bush-bashing? If they had not reported it, who knows if it would ever have been discovered.

No, it was reported on the evening news last night. And if this were a Republican like Joe Bruno, it would have made front page.

Ah got it. Was the evening news perhaps reporting that the story WOULD BE in tomorrow's NY Times? Because, perhaps, the NY TIMES, in addition to breaking the story leaked out publicity to the rest of the media that they had a really juicy story about Charlie Rangel, liberal Congressman, that they would be breaking in tomorrow's papers? Did their Liberal Bias cause them to do that as some sort of "Reverse psychology?"
I'm glad you are here to explain this liberal bias to me because otherwise I would have thought that the NY Times AND the "TV News" that reported the story last night had NO Liberal bias because they reported this dirt on, you know, a fellow liberal. Now I see it's much much more complex than that.

It was online with the NY Times yesterday. I read it there long before the evening news broadcasts.
eta: Even FoxNews is crediting the Times for breaking the story.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 1:50pmYeah. The NY Times did all the investigation and broke the story, regardless of where else reported it. Still curious why since they have such a pervasive liberal bias.
