Why do critics love Hairspray the movie?!?!

But to each his own. We all don't have to enjoy everyone! But we don't have to criticize people who enjoy the film and think it's the best film of the year either. It isn't everyday we get a really good movie musical. And it is one of the highest reviewed films of the year so far. It does what a movie is suppose to do: ENTERTAIN.

I used to think that the best way to enjoy a film was to look at it analytically. Could that part be cast better? What if the script were changed? Why not make that character mute? That would underline the symbolism and be more powerful.
I was talking with my college age nephew one day and he was slicing up some movie, taking issue with tiny things, pointing out ways it could have been better-- and it hit me: Who cares? It is what it is. When I direct a movie, then I'll have to make these choices. Till then, I'll look at a movie for what it is and try to not feel compelled to think "Like a critic" and enjoy it (or not) for what it is.
I loved Hairspray. Start to finish. I've taken people to see it and loved it all over as someone I love fell under it's spell. I'm taking my Sister tonight. I'm glad most people seem to like it. If you don't, I'm sorry- I wish you could. It made me laugh, it made me smile, it brought some joy into an otherwise dull weeekend.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 3:21pmI liked it alot, but it is nowhere near as good as the original film. I'm not understanding the big praise here either.

I disagree doodle- And I liked the original film. But it was uneven and filled with performances that, while amusing, were a little too "amateur hour" to hold up to repeated viewings. I think this film did a great job of grabbing some of those moments from the original and repackaging them. Prudy is far more enjoyable played by Allison Janney for example. "Some of your personal stains required beating on a rock" really sang in this incarnation.
And speaking of Travolta- what worked for me was that Edna was big, but vulnerable. Both Harvey & Divine played her like a force of nature- there was NO way that she wasn't going to triumph before the final reel. Travolta's Edna seems like she really hadn't been out of the house in 10 years-- and when she finds her voice, it's a real triumph.

I LOVED Hairspray. I had much of a fun time as I did when I first watched the musical on stage for the first time. I think some people just need to watch a movie to have a good time. Thinking about what could have been done to make a movie better is just a waste of time. Also this was the first time in a long time that I have seen an audience get involved in the movie. They laughed and clapped and cheered throughout the movie "I even heard some awwws!"
I also have to agree that people who have not seen the musical, for some it will be like having seen it on stage for the first time and LOVING IT!

I'm still trying to figure out why it's such a big deal if critics like something but you don't.
It wasn't a problem for me concerning BROKEBACK.
