Today in the Panera Bread parking lot I saw a SUV with a Bush/ Cheney bumpersticker. The urge to go in and have the driver paged was OVERWHELMING. I didn't really "get" the passion for this man when he ran for President, but I am completely and utterly bewildered why any of his supporters still support him.

My Nephew and his Wife are big "W" fans. When I asked him this summer to please explain to me why he liked Bush he immediately launched into a "John Kerry Sucks!" rampage. I stopped him-- that's not what I asked. He's not merely supporting the lesser of two evils, he's actively promoting GW Bush. (His wife had a HUGE "W is for WOMEN!" sticker on her car, he had a "W" Flag from his antenna.) I jsut wanted to know why. What has W done or what quality does he have that makes you want to say "I love this man, our president!" My Nephew told me he didn't want to ruin the day by arguing politics. (Funny, he didn't mind ruining the day by calling Kerry a "Gold digging, purple heart- stealing liberal")

On another thread, talk of W was countered by a conservative who could only answer by repeatedly posting "Jimmy Carter, worst president ever!" Well, lemme tell you, When Carter left office, he had little or no support. Not many people sang his praises-- and while he tanked the economy and presided over some big ambarrassments, I think he's going to come out smelling like a ROSE compared to this guy!

But what I want to know is, what makes people still love W?

I don't support him. Never did. He is the worst President of all time.

i ask myself this question everyday... even moreso in recent months. there's nothing one can say that could backup an advocacy of this man.

i lose sleep at night pondering the possibilities...

PalJoey - seriously, you nailed it. Anyone STILL supporting him is simply incapable of admitting they were wrong. Hell, BUSH came as close to saying he was wrong as he's probably capable of doing on Wed. during his speech (not that his actions don't speak louder than words). I've never understood the support, and I never will. There's no doubt history will have ranked at the bottom of the "best presidents" list...

plus an entire media network to support & coordinate their delusion.

& funny how when we one tries to discuss the policies of *TODAY*, they want to talk about someone who was president over 20 years ago.

i think another aspect is they see all of this thru a sports filter..."my team vs your team", without seeing the outcome as having real consequences that affect all of our lives.

Maybe its because when Bush declares himself King, they think they'll get invited to the Palace.

belief in the fact that it was right and necessary to go into iraq, despite the mistakes that were made in the aftermath. the knowledge that even with a war and a half sucking cash like linda lovelace on a meth binge that the unemployment is still 5% and even with the tax cuts that tax revenues are historically high. belief in the manner in which the image of the president as a person who doesn't give a flying f*ck what anybody thinks effects our enemies. belief that complete failure in iraq (which i don't believe has happened yet) will cost the nation and the world more in the long run than the blood and treasure it will cost to succeed. the knowledge that if i was in a fight, i'd want dubya on my side over kerry or gore and i believe the nation's in a fight for the soul of the world.

i don't agree with the idea that he's a moron. i don't agree with the idea that he's a puppet (either for cheney or rove or for big oil). i don't agree with the supposition that he's a criminal or that he lied to get us into this fight.

i think he's the right guy at the right time.

that's why i still support the president, joe.

as far as the bumper sticker? they're darn tough to get off.

belief in the fact that it was right and necessary to go into iraq

then they should have made the case on the merits of those beliefs.

It sounds like you are cheering for the terrorists, Al Qaeda, and all of the fascists in Iraq and Iran.

You speak without knowing the facts. Read all of the posts before you say that there is nothing there.

You are exactly what they said you would be.

hilarious.

Papa--you can say it as much as you like but going into Iraq was the wrong way to fight Islamist terrorism. The absolute wrongheaded way to fight for that "soul of the world."

There was nothing about our invasion of Iraq that accomplished anything and no one with a smattering of knowledge about middle-eastern culture, history, politics and religion would ever have said that deposing Saddam Hussein would end terrorism.

And you know that.

Thanks Papa I'm glad to get your perspective. I don't necessarily agree, but I can see where you're coming from.

And Yes, HD you caught me. I am a bloodthirsty America-hating Terorist because I don't toe Republican Party line. I hate Apple Pie, too.

pj, you're not going to change my mind and i'm not going to change yours. i do believe that going into iraq was the right thing to do. containment was not going to be a long term solution (and i'm not talking about saddam). diplomacy was never going to be a long term solution. the calculus of the region had to be changed and the invasion did that. i don't think it's about stopping terror in the short term but about helping to set the conditions for long term change in the region.

And, no one called anyone a terrorist supporter for refusing to "tow the Republican line."

You are seen as supporting the terrorists because you are in total agreement with Al Qaeda leaders about current policy for the United States of America. I know it is uncomfortable, but all of the fascists in Iraq agree with your apparent position: bring the troops home now.

Please have your own views. Disagree with President all you would like, but how about a credible position that does not agree with the terrorists.
