*you* are the one who so blithely said, "who cares"

Troops uncertain about success in Iraq

I actually said "Who cares if Bush is losing support?" because people keep acting like we, his supporters, are to dress in sack clothing and prostrate ourselves on the ground just because he has a low approval rating. Not "Who cares about Iraq?" Because I do care about Iraq. But I do remind you that the people who enlisted in the military are big boys and girls, and they can decide for themselves whether or not they want to give their lives for their country. When you join the military, there is ALWAYS that risk, and I'm sure that they considered it.

"Wright said he worried U.S. public support for the war was waning and that U.S. troops could be withdrawn prematurely. He has worked too hard, for too long to strengthen Iraq just to walk away."

Exactly my point.

"The people who voluntarily signed up for the military and gave their lives for their country, you mean, and whose death you are belittling by turning them into statistics for your propaganda and not supporting their cause? "

Their cause? THEIR CAUSE??

Or maybe Bush's overwhelming desire to be known as a "war present.

You belittle them by assuming that you know what THEIR cause might be!

When you're in the military, sadly it doesn't matter what your own personal cause may be. Your cause, really, is your country. Though most military people I know are supportive of the war and of Bush.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - one of the cornerstones of the personal contract between service members and the government is the good faith that they will only be endangered for justifiable cause. At BEST, right now, that is debateable.

I believe that Iraq is a justifiable cause, but I know that you guys don't, and I don't think it would be worth it trying to argue this. So, yeah.

Spork - I don't even really need to get into the philosophical implications inherrent in either arguement. I simply look at the reality of how our military is currently being deployed, and the dismal failure it has turned out to be. Even if you advocate continuing intervention, that reality exists. At the very least, a completely different approach needs to be considered. If you keep doing the same thing, but expect the results to change, then you're an idiot.

I do agree there. I was happy to hear in the speech that more responsibility would be put on the Iraq government, but it doesn't sound like that's happening...

I don't support Bush, the war or our troops fighting in it. The USA is not responsible for cleaning up the worlds mistakes.

And the ONLY reason we are cleaning up Iraq is because War is a business. It's a perfect setup. The corporations are getting richer, the majority of Americans are suffering NO losses and the people who are dying get "they volunteered" and a ribbon.

All right HDT2, I will answer it for you (strictly my opinion). I don't happen to accept the notion that there is a "war on terror," especially as defined by the Bush doctrine. Announcing a war on terror is kind of like announcing a war on evil or a war on stupidity. It's too broad, generalized and unendable to have any meaning. BUT, just for the sake of argument, let's posit that there is a war of sorts against Al Qaeda, the group responsible for launching an attack against the US. Yes, I want the US to prevail against them. In other words, yes, I want the US to win. Is that clear enough for you? Unambiguous enough? What I don't believe is that the war in Iraq contributes to that victory. I'm convinced it undermines it and has devastatingly weakened the US for years to come.

Asked and answered. No. No. No. I don't want us to win. I don't even want us to play!

The question is bullsh*t. "Do you want America to win?"

Of course you'll be hard pressed to find someone who says no. But the truth is Americans want out of Iraq and according to you that is a loss. So just accept that the majority of Americans do not want the USA to win but are too afraid to utter those words.

I don't believe George Bush wants America to win.

If he did, he would not have made the stupid mistakes he's made.

I believe I am smarter about middle-east politics, culture and history than George Bush or any of his advisors.

I don't believe George Bush is capable of leading America to victory over Islamist (NOT "-ic") terrorism.

If George Bush REALLY wanted America to win, he would listen to me and the millions of Americans who are smarter than he is about the Middle East.

In what appears to be a Bush Administration effort to persuade skeptical Senate Republicans to support the president's new Iraq strategy, several of them have been summoned to the White House for a meeting this morning with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. The invited Republicans included Sens. Sam Brownback, George Voinovich, John Sununu, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins. All of them have expressed at least some misgivings about Bush's plan for sending more troops into Iraq.

"Anyone who favors bringing the troops home now is in total agreement with the terrorists. (I know its inconvenient, but it is still true!)"

I'm surprised that no one pointed out that this is one of the most ignorant statements Chanticleer has made. It's the same "if you're not for us, you're against us" argument that tries to pretend there are no other motivations in existence for favoring a side other than one. The one they choose to acknowledge.

"Has anyone answered the question, do you want us to win?"

Nobody answered it because it is a stupid, not to mention, loaded question.

PS - Yes, there are still troops in Afghanistan. My friend is one of them. He already did one tour in Iraq. We're hoping he comes back safe to his wife and two little boys in April. And no, he does not support the decisions of our unfortunate President Bush.

Can the conservatives not see that there are LOTS of ways to "fight terrorism" other than dropping bombs or shooting people?

This whole "You have to agree with me or you are UnAmerican" thing makes me sick.

its bizarre that they are going back & recycling talking points from 2003.
you would think theyd hae some new material by now. doesnt halliburton have slogan writers?

next, he's gonna move on to "we have to fight them there so we dont have to fight them here"

& sporkypie already pulled the "if you dont support the mission, you dont support the troops" argument, like its some kind of basketball tournament & we're demanding the busdriver turn around & bring the team home instead of letting them compete in the playoffs!
