Posted: 12/12/05 at 5:10pmLooks like I'll be walking the 17 blocks from my apartment to work.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 5:11pmMaybe my mother will actually bother to wake up early and drive me to school!!!!!
re: Will NYers be walking?#3
Posted: 12/12/05 at 5:14pmLooks like I might have a day off on Friday.
re: Will NYers be walking?#4
Posted: 12/12/05 at 5:18pmI can't see this strike happening but if it does, I don't think I'm walking the 2 miles to work. I could, but it IS cold, right?
re: Will NYers be walking?#5
Posted: 12/12/05 at 5:21pmYup. The high tomorrow is 27 degrees, with a low of 17 degrees. I might have to splurge on a cab.

I seriously doubt this is going to happen. It would shut down the city.
But, I sure as heck am not walking from Astoria to Times Square.

If this happens, I'm screwed.
I'm a 45 minute walk to Times Square - pretty much where I work. I do'nt think it'll happen, though.

Brooklyn to Times Square.
Not gonna happen.

Posted: 12/13/05 at 12:03pmThere is no way I'm walking almost 100 blocks to work with the weather as bad as it is. I don't think it's going to happen or last long if it does.

Posted: 12/13/05 at 12:24pmMelissa Erico Fan-I'm afraid it'll be impossible to get a taxi when this happens! Boy, are those cabs going to be in power-now's when they raise their rates. Today on the news they announced LIRR plans to go into effect if the strike occurs and I think they said schools will open two hours later. I'm crossing my fingers this doesn't happen~
re: Will NYers be walking?#11
Posted: 12/13/05 at 4:40pmLuckily, I leave for work at 7:15 AM. There should be plenty of cabs available that early (I hope)!
re: Will NYers be walking?#12
Posted: 12/13/05 at 5:38pmI really hope this doesn't happen. I have to go back to Queens this weekend to visit my parents, and I really don't want to have to take a cab.
re: Will NYers be walking?#13
Posted: 12/13/05 at 5:40pmI sincerely hope this is not going to happen. i live almost 2 miles away from my school, an dI have to be there by 7:30 AM. Plus, the cold weather is too much to be walking in.

17 blocks, mef? 2 miles, guys? COME ON. That is completely walkable - I would walk it if there was a strike or not.
I live on the upper 70's on the East side. Everything I do is on the west side, or downtown. I don't know how I'll survive if this strike happens. Walking to Times Square isn't an issue, I do it sometimes anyway just because I can - but I don't really enjoy it.
re: Will NYers be walking?#15
Posted: 12/13/05 at 5:52pmI'm definitely in for a lotto friday night if there is a strike, I can walk the 30 blocks to times square, and hopefully it won't be so crowded!

2 miles, guys?
2 miles any other way doesn't bother me. I actually quite like to walk, but it's just oo cold out.

Posted: 12/13/05 at 5:59pmmy dad works for the NYCTA and he says they will most likely walk out on strike but it will not last long.....
re: Will NYers be walking?#18
Posted: 12/13/05 at 6:42pmmaybe I'm just a country gal, but 2 miles really isn't that far. I walk that every day!
re: Will NYers be walking?#19
Posted: 12/13/05 at 6:44pmThose of us living in Queens and who need to get to Time Sqaure are kinda SH*T outta luck. Especially since it's supposed to be quite cold.
re: Will NYers be walking?#20
Posted: 12/13/05 at 6:45pmmominator- 2 miles is not far at all. 2 miles in this abysmally cold weather we're having isn't as pleasant.

My wife will drive me & pick me up @ night
The MTA needs to stand firm. There is no reason for my having to pay ever higher fares so a retired MTA worker can have his medical premiums paid. This is insanity & both GM & Ford are kicking themselves for agreeing to this . We are paying the benefits of more workers than are currently on the payroll. In the real world, workers now pay part of their premiums. In the bizarro world of muncipal employees, taxpayers pick up the tab even after you have left the job
If they strike, the MTA should hold out as long as necessary. A bad contract ( for the riders ) is worse than the strike

Munk, 17 blocks might not sound like a lot, but in the freezing cold NY winter, it can feel like an eternity!
