I'm heading to NY in April, and I'm just asking advice as I don't want to seem like an absolute tourist and turn up in an eskimo outfit (I am from Australia).

Basically, for cold weather here I wear jeans, sneaker-type shoe, a t-shirt and just a normal jumper/sweater.

I will probably need more than this right for weather that is <50 degrees F right?

What kind of shoes and 'sweaters' do you guys wear?

thanks

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

I would think you would be fine in April--it can certainly be cold, but not too bad. It's all about layers. You might bring a light coat in case it does drop below 50. The rest should be fine. I wear sneakers now as long as it's above freezing.

50 degrees fahrenheit is not terribly cold. April is no longer winter, but well on the way to feeling like Spring. I'd be more inclined to worry about the amount of rain that often hits -- particularly for your shoes. Nothing worse than having to put wet shoes back on and spend the day in them. The layers suggestion is a great one, though....just in case.

For many years now, we've had nasty weather in April: cool and rainy.

I would say to definitely bring along a windbreaker and a scarf.

COOL, yes. But not really COLD. (Although anything is possible.) I hope you don't go the week I do, because I have the worst weather luck!

But I hail from Boston. I put my Winter coat away on March 15. Regardless. I also refuse to wear it before November 1. Ridiculous, I know. But I hate coats.

"COOL, yes. But not really COLD. (Although anything is possible.)"

I don't know how it's been in Boston, but in NYC these past Aprils, what with the chill, rain and wind, it certainly seemed cold to me. I remember in my long-ago youth, April used to mean balmy spring weather, (March, too.) No more. And plays were better, then, too!

I too hate coats, and avoid wearing them much longer than I should. Which is probably why I always end up getting sick in April.

A suggestion:

Bring thermal underwear. One never knows how sharply the temps may fall in April. Thermals will do the trick and they don't take much room in your suitcase.

I brought thermals to Europe in October. As I travel light, they were just the things I needed when it got very cool at night.

I tend to not go overboard when dressing for the whether in regards to a trip to NYC. I speed walk everywhere so by the time I get to my destination I'm feeling very warm.

Also, there have been times when I've worn my spring jacket in winter. My dress coats are wool and hold water so if I know it's going to rain I'll take my spring jacket instead. Definitely bring something that is water resistant or else you'll be wearing a wet and heavy jacket all night. Wearing a coat that feels like it weighs ten pounds is not comfortable at all. My best suggestion is to wear something that buttons or zippers under your jacket. When you get to the theatre you can check your coat and keep the second jacket with you. Sometimes I think it's colder in the theatres than it is outside.

Thanks...I didn't consider the rain. Hope it's not too bad.

I never wear winter clothes, because I only wear cotton. so I wear the same things all year round, and I layer them. I'm going to suggest layering to you, and an umbrella!
