As I sit here, in a slightly Vicodin-induced haze and a bit of pain, having had 4 teeth taken out, does anyone have suggestions?
I picked up noodle soup, jello, pudding, and yogurt. Any ideas on how to get through the kind of achy pain? Thanks!
I remember how much it hurt when I woke up a few hours after the surgery. Good luck Shira!
I love your av too!

Okay, she needs help, not comments...
Just sleep. Sleep off the pain.
Shira, take it easy. Get a very small spoon and eat in small bites, it will hurt very badly if you try to open your mouth too widely. Mashed potatoes, oatmeal, yogurt, etc work wonders. I hope you feel better sweetie! *hug*

Shira, try ice pops. Cold numbs the pain and reduces inflammation. As long as you are on Vicodin, I would be glad to play Scrabble with you. Maybe I would win.
Hi girl... this is gonna sound strange, and it might help, and it might not, but... simply put your hand over where it hurts on one side. Do it for a few minutes, then do the other side. Do this about once an hour.
Sounds interesting DD -- I think I've been doing that anyway for dramatic effect "Oh, the PAIN! Mom...I want this!"
Thanks for the suggestions guys -- I appreciate it.
Yenta, when I know I can think, I'll play you! Yay!
By the way, I think Vicodin is better than therapy -- I'm all relaxed!
As for the avatar, thanks! I do love it so!
Ohhh...blurryish screen, this is fun!
Codin is wonderful! I had all four teeth removed at once, and was in pain for two weeks. I can't remember most of it. I'm not a fan of aspirin or any painkillers, but man, I needed that codin. Thats C-O-D-I-N. All your answers are in this little ol' bottle vita- wait, sorry. I could only take it ever four hours, so I would take it on the minute the time passed. It kind of makes you very drowsy, so I would take it, settle in on the couch with an ice pack on my mouth, and doze. I don't think I could have gotten through it without the miracle drug.
P.S. I had the all milkshake diet for two weeks. I'm serious. I perfected the chocolate milkshake: chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup with chocolate milk. Yum. I'm so going to die young.
When I had mine removed I too had all four out at once but I never was in enough pain to take the Vicodin. I took it once because the doctor told me to and then after that I just used advil and it was fine. But, I will say Chocolate Mousse is fanastic.
Yeah, I did the all 4 out once thing -- makes it easier, yes?
Coedine...Ahh, I take it for my bronchitis, but for this the vicodin is fine. But it's CODEINE -- I've been taking the stuff 3-4 times a year since I was 10. Hmm, I wonder what Tom Cruise would say about it.
So I'm all drifty, in and out...except for the achiness, I'm doing good!

Get well flowers for Shira!
How did they put you under? With an IV? I'm going to have to get mine out, so I'm a bit nervous.
Enjoy the trippiness of the vicodin, at least.
Thanks nia!
I went with the IV and general anesthesia. My theory is, if you're doing any type of anything that involves pain, please knock me out. Completely. I'm not going to be brave and "work through the pain".
Nia, it's not too bad. Like I said, a bit achy in the jaw (hell, I just had 4 teeth taken out), and I'm all trippy which is rather fun, and kosher chicken soup rocks my socks!
But hey, they had to come out, so bye bye teeth -- I should have saved them! Oh well!
My mother said once I was out, the whole thing took about 30 mins.

*slightly nervous* Oh well.
My friend got his wisdom teeth out and then came to a party on lots of Vicodin. He doesn't remember a thing about that night, which some people consider to be good. Does that happen to you too?
I wonder how much he took! No, I remember everything going on right now. I don't plan on taking too much!
I agree, I was knocked out too. First they gave me an IV then general. It's the best way to go.
I was a sight the day I got mine out: I came home before the novocaine wore off, so I spent a good part of the day slack-jawed and drooling, covered in ice cream.
I opted not to take my Vicodin, because my oral surgeon warned me that some people get sick from it, and that was the last thing I needed on top of everything else. I just took Motrin, like, 4 at a time and it worked great.
Good food choices. I lived on mashed potatoes and ice cream for a week. Once I reached my tolerance for those (which was about 48 hours...hee...) my mom bought this teeny tiny pasta that I could eat without having to chew it much.
"Hmm, I wonder what Tom Cruise would say about it."
Psh. Tom Cruise can cram it.
This drooling thing BITES. I feel all weird because of that. Oh well, it's not like anyone will see me now!
By the way, the new sugar-free Jello ain't bad. I'm avoiding the mashed potatoes because a) they are my favorites things EVER, and b) let's not COMPLETELY ruin the diet, right?
As for the Vicodin making you sick -- hmm, maybe that's the nausea. Thanks for the heads up!
It's odd -- I took it, and I guess I'm awake because I slept the whole day. I need to sleep dammit! I figured it would knock me out. Oh well.
Thanks so much for your help, guys! The only think I'm sad about is that, at this rate, I don't think I can see Jason Robert Brown's concert Thursday night -- and I really wanted to go!
Ooo, I had my wisdom teeth pulled last summer (4 impacted) and couldn't go to NYC like I'd planned for months, so I was miserable. This was my "get better" strategy:
Take all the Vicodin that was prescribed. Hell, call in an extra bottle and tell them you need it. Pain killers are always the right answer. The only time it made me sick was when I took it on an empty stomach (yeah, I didn't listen to the warnings). I nearly got sick in church during the sermon. So as long as you avoid that, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Also, take 2 ibprofen every 4-6 hours, it helps with the transitions between Vicodin doses, so you don't feel any pain as it wears off.
Alternate hot and cold on your cheeks. Keep a heating pad on for 20 minutes, then next hour, put an ice pack on them. My doctor recommended this and it worked much better than just ice.
Eat the liquid/nonchewing foods for as long as you can deal with, because those first few times you have to do normal chewing, it will hurt. Avoid bread, it clumps and gets caught in your holes.
Hope you feel better soon!
I only took vicodin once when I had my last two pulled, by the second day there was no pain.
Shira - as someone who considers herself a queen of oral surgery (3 jaw surgeries to correct my bite) I can say with confidence that I understand all too well what you are going through. The good news is that the lack of energy, swelling, the pain, the drooling, and the nausea will all go away.
The part that sucks is this... (I'm sorry to burst your bubble)....don't use this time to try and loose weight cause your body needs the nutrition to heal and, in my experience anyway, I always ended up gaining it all back and then some.
I hope you feel well enough to see JRB, although I think the meds have you a bit loopy. What's this about Thursday? Isn't he only playing Friday and Saturday? I was shooting for Saturday so let me know what day you are going. FEEL BETTER! I'm definitely the person to whine to if you need to vent, I TOTALLY feel your pain!

I haven't had mine out, but they're just growing in an that hurts too...
I did have two teeth pulled from the back of my mouth after breaking them... I lived on sherbert and smoothies. If you're face is swollen (mine was) wrap some ice or an ice pack in a soft washcloth and hold it to your face... you have to wrap it first because sometimes the hard ice pack can hurt it more. Also, Tylonal is your best friend.
Thursday? Friday? Saturday? What? (Okay, before this next dose kicks in, let's see what Shira can process!)
It's Friday and Saturday at El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood.
