And, DG, hopefully my previous post cleared things up, but I WAS directing the thread for a moment to US affairs. Since that is where most of us live and what we deal with directly.

CNN is on--I am well aware of what you say. However, I would correct you as we are being lopped into the cartoon affair. The protesters are cursing our name as well as the Danish.

which is curious considering how few major american news organizations saw fit to publish and or depict the cartoons in question while all too happily showing the latest abu grahib photos.

this 'cartoon' nonsense - doesn't have anything to do with the US

???? Tell that to the American Embassy in Indonesia that they attempted to take yesterday....or the riots in Turkey aimed at the Danes and Americans in regards to the cartoons......

these problems certainly DO have a lot to do with the US

THAT is indeed ironic! But interesting that the cartoon was more offensive to Muslims than seeing actual people humiliated and hurt.

Religious fanatics have their priorities SO screwed up, whether they are Christian or Muslim.

To the fundamentalists, when you speak of the west, it all comes back to the US. It does not matter if we have been sensitive on this issue. Everything always comes back to the US, and to Israel.

We are dealing with leadership that is intent on fannning the flames of ignorance and hatred as a means to secure their own power base - much as Bush did after 9/11 - the Radical Muslim leadership is doing the same with regard to their religion. Same tools, same tactics, different audience.

There were no Iraqi's on the planes that hit the towers, but we still attacked Iraq. Israel and the US played no part in the development or publication of the cartoons, yet they are the ultimate target to it gets twisted to cast blame where the leaders want to it go.

True that.

"Religious fanatics have their priorities SO screwed up, whether they are Christian or Muslim."

Not exactly true. In the same week this cartoon mess began, there was a magazine cover of Kanye West posing as Jesus. Muslims began rioting, burning and killing. Christians did not. You can't compare the two religions.

BULLSH*T--the Christian fanatics who obsessed over Christmas when people are starving and dying in THIS country.

Fanatics are bad all around the world--and Christian fanatics are backwards and, yes, sometimes very violent.

I am not speaking of respectful people of faith who have their priorities in check.

there's a difference between obsessing and killing, jerby.

I don't believe I was being specific or qualifying--I said "religious fanatics have their priorities so screwed up".

And, I was thinking of what sparked protest. Muslims protesting over the cartoon who never did over the prison photos. Don't put words in my mouth.

oh and "and Christian fanatics are backwards and, yes, sometimes very violent. " refers to abortion clinics, gay bashings, the 96 Olympics, etc.

I have a feeling that the next world crisis isn't disease or war, it's water. In our Western World we don't seem to have a clue of what a huge issue water management is in the world. I think I might live in the most uninformed area when it comes to water issues, the Great Lakes. We just can't wrap our little brains around the concept of draught...

Greed and rising global temperatures are going to quickly to deplete water sources until a large part of the world is in alot of trouble.

"oh and "and Christian fanatics are backwards and, yes, sometimes very violent. " refers to abortion clinics, gay bashings, the 96 Olympics, etc."

This is a very small group of mental cases doing things under the name of Christianity. Many Christians have spoken out against this violent behavior.

What's going on with the cartoon issue is thousands and thousands of Muslims out of control with very few Muslims speaking out against their behavior.

Cartoons drive them up a wall & we must be tolerant of their religion

I did not remember having this conversation when the church where Christ was born in Bethlehem was seized & basically used as a urinal by those who seized it. They are the same people who are rioting now. So much for tolerance. To Muslims, anyone who is not a Muslim is an infidel

Anyone who, in the name of religion of any kind , commits mayhem should be punished. I am Catholic but if you bomb an abortion clinic you should be punished to the fullest extent possible & anyone of any religion who breaks the law, in the name of religion , needs to be punished

I do not recall many muslims denouncing 9/11 . As a matter of fact, I saw a lot of celebrating

Coming in late here - but I was a little disturbed by some of the Pollyanna views earlier in this thread. It's all well and good to believe in the goodness of humanity, and yes, 99.99% of people probably ARE truly good. All it takes is one Hitler, Mussolini, or Bin Laden with access to the right technology/power to create world havoc. It's scary as hell, but when I don't even believe in the goodness of our OWN administration, I'm sorry, but I have very little faith in the "goodness of humanity" pulling us through. If Bin Laden had his hand over the button, he's not going to have a little voice in his head saying "oh, those Jews, they're not so bad after all" -- even if it meant his own death. Part of the problem with this administration is they fail to realize that people in other parts of the world THINK differently than we do.

In addition, (and I know this is turning into an anti-Bush rant), think about how WE would feel if the situation was reversed -- Iraq decided one day that a tyrannical monarchy was the only way to go - so, one day, unprovoked, they, with their better weapons and more man power, came into America, overthrew our government, and tried adjusting us to THEIR way of thinking. How would we react? Of course the parallel isn't exact, but the ending is the same - we wouldn't be happy and wouldn't stand for it. Think about the American Revolution, that's EXACTLY what's happening in Iraq -- but the American people didn't have terrorist mind-sets or the willingness to die for the cause. That extremism is what scares the hell out of me.

Well, back to mindless sitcoms -- breathe deeply, breathe deeply...

Goth--is it a competition and JUST because they are less fanatical Christians, somehow my point is moot? No. Religious fanatics have their priorities in the wrong place---whether it's violent or simply getting riled up over the wrong issues.

Jason - What I find disturbing is your not-very-thinly-veiled derisive use of the pop term 'Pollyanna'. If you had read the thread as it progressed, you might have noticed that, while there is an understanding and acceptance of the reality of certain situations, it doesn't mitigate the fact that PHILOSPHICALLY some people find this disturbing. And honestly, if you feel that by someone saying that they find the situation unbalancing to the soul that they can't understand the stark reality at hand, then you aren't really giving anyone credit for any sense of awareness.

I am a Bible person and I do believe we are living in the last days. All the dire predictions in the Book are coming to pass...famine, catastrophe, plague, children killing their parents, parents killing their children, children killing themselves and each other, rape, war, etc., etc. The Middle East is a tinder box. That is where the 'end' will begin, just as it is written. An now the latest, our waterfronts under the control of the Arabs. Can you believe that?!!! I don't understand the logic of our government...putting the fox in the hen house.

Well, then we have been in the last days for hundreds and hundreds of years now by that description.

And these times are rather calm given history's death and devastation.
