Worst Film Ever Made Gets Honored - Why?

Mr Roxy said: "On Monday, the Library of Congress will add to its National Film Registry a film conceded by those who saw it - very few - as the worst film ever made. No it is not Plan 9 From Outer Space. It is the Holocaust howler " The Day The Clown Cried" written by and starring Jerry Lewis. He donated it with the proviso it would not be shown for 10 years. If he is still alive, he would be 99.

The title of this thread and the contents of Mr. Roxy's first post is extremely misleading. The Library of Congress is not honoring this film in any way, shape or form. It is not designating this film as historically, aesthetically or culturally significant as it has many other films.

The film was simply donated along with other materials from his storied career to them by Jerry Lewis himself with the provision that the film not be shown for 10 years.

That makes it even more delicious!

Did you know Jerry wears a brand new pair of socks every day and donates them to charity after wearing them once?

Anything short of the print being burned is an honor. The library accepting it is an honor.

^^ Ha ha! He's got a point!

I'm simultaneously appalled and intrigued by Lewis's enormous self-regard. So I feel I HAVE to see this movie, may he rest in peace.

I read the screenplay once, which was enough to leave me slack-jawed. I'm not sure I have the constitution to see it brought to life.

Now I'm trying to picture the little homes that proudly display Lewis's near-new socks in a small glass case i.e., "The star of THE GEISHA BOY wore these."

I do like Shearer's description of it though: "It's like being in Tiajuana and seeing a black velvelt painting of Auschwitz".

I was wondering if the way I wrote that gave the impression that he donated them to charity to auction off? I think he gives them away after they've been washed (and perhaps ironed?) to places like Goodwill.

Still, I'd pay over $10 for a pair of his socks worn in "Hardly Working."
