After fighting for three years, I am finally going to get the weight loss surgery I need. Yesterday, I saw my surgeon and he is now doing the lap band procedure. This is a much safer option for me than the bypass because I have heart disease and diabetes. Iam on Medicare and they will begin covering it in about 2 months. It has been a long road for me battling morbid obesity for over 25 years. It is not about looking good in the latest fashion, but a matter of life and death. My life at the moment is on the line and there is very little quality to it. I can barely walk, do much physically and I am in constant pain. Many people say that I am exagerating the issue . They should try taking a breath with the difficulty I do or even taking a few steps. It will be a tough journey as I have to lose about 200 lbs, but one well worth taking. Funny, I am starting to finally see my future.

You know if Dollypop says good luck, then you've really got some luck going for you
Good luck Yenta. For some reason I have been seeing a lot of documentaries on morbid obesity and surgical weight loss recently.
you do what you have to, and the heck with the naysayers........sounds like you've got a plan, and I am sure it will work out exactly as you want it to. It's a very brave thing you are doing....not sure if I could. Bravo!

He is very smart, Mominator. He is the ONLY doc at Hartford Hospital who does this surgery. He started the program a year ago and I am very proud to be one of his patients.
I am so happy for you!! Be sure to let folks know where to send the cards!!

All the best to you, Yenta, Dear.
This just made me cry - a lot. A very close friend is arriving at my house tomorrow for a couple of days. She's on a 10-day road-trip, during which time she needs to decide whether to have bypass surgery. She, too, has lived with obesity for many years, and is also very diabetic. She is scared and frightened, but must live with the knowledge that there may be fewer options as the days go by.
I'm going to share your story with her, and please know that all my best thoughts are with you as you move toward a brighter future.

Thank you all for your good wishes and thoughts. This is a tough one for me. DG: please tell your friend that I found it far more scarier to be morbidly obese on a day to day basis than actually having the surgery. I have lived with the cardiac complications as well as diabetes for many years now. However, there are so many good medicines around now to help stabilize her for surgery. Also, ther lap band is far less invasive than the bypass. It takes about 45 mins to an hour in the OR as opposed to nearly 3. That means much less time under anesthesia. Do encourage her to go to her local hospital's support group if they have one BEFORE surgery. That has made quite a diffrence for me.

My mother is morbidly obese as well as one of my sisters. I wish they both would have the surgery. My mother will be 75 so is probably too old.
I hope all is well and I will send positive vibes to you!!!!!
God bless GCY2!!
You've got a GREAT attitude, and it sounds like this is the next positive "adventure" in your life. Your past will keep you strong, and your future looks very bright indeed. Be brave, and be well.
