Posted: 4/18/12 at 1:19pmI don't even know what to say about stories like this any more. I can only hope that I'm raising my son not to be a kid who would do those kinds of things to another child. So sad.

Yes, bringing awareness to them is important but on the other side are we providing an inspiration to Gay Kids being bullied who are looking for a way to make it stop? Teens struggling with coming out are uder a great amount of stress and self doubt.

Not trying to belittle the gay aspect, but suicide is a major concern for everyone. There is a completed suicide every 2 hours in the US and its a leading cause of death. Teens in general are at greater risk.
Suicide gets little to no media attention and is not on the radar as a preventable health concern in this country. Its very sad.
I'm just not sure how I feel about only hearing about suicide when a gay teen takes their life. We need a much broader discussion.

I agree that suicide in general is an important issue to bring up. I'm not sure the focus on gay teen suicides in specific is a negative though--it does seem to be a bigger issue with gay youths--even the reported suicides of kids who have from all reports not been gay were largely still teased for being "fags".
I do wonder sometimes about all the reports planting the idea in the heads for some subsequent suicides, but I think ultimately it seems more important to raise the issue.

I agree that the issue of suicide is not often discussed in our society- except in hindsight, after one has occurred.
Suicidal thoughts are not all that uncommon in teens or young adults, for any number of reasons. Many in that age range don't seek help or talk openly about it because it carries so much stigma, and they think none of their peers have had these thoughts.
