re: You have IT or you DONT.

I'm one of those people (especially now in high school) who believe "If it's not meant to be, then why do it at all?", so I completely understand where you're coming from.

I'm well-aware that I probably won't be able to make it in the musical theatre business, but something about it just attracts me and it might just be the thrill of performing for someone and then for an audience to applaud for something that you did. People do it because it's enjoyable, and although they might not make a career out of it, it's still something that you are attracted to.
This is my signature.

I finally called a voice teacher after months of avoiding it out of fear...whether I ever amount to anything, who knows...

re: You have IT or you DONT.

i think people do it because they enjoy it. i know that my voice teacher has a lot of adult students. they take voice lessons not because they want to make it as a singer, but because it's something that they enjoy and have fun doing.

going back to the whole "you got it or you ain't" theory; i believe that too. no matter how much training a person gets, they've got to have something else, something unique, and something special that sets them apart from the rest. a lot of people out there are "by-the-book" talented. BUT just because they can sing/dance/act perfectly does not mean that it will get them anywhere. true stars have the IT FACTOR. there is just something about them.

Despite what I posted earlier, I've decided that I DON'T have it!

Yes, let's keep the peons who are determined to be deficient in "it" out of the performing arts forever. Of course, "it" will be determined solely by those who are convinced that they have it, so they can clear the way for the truly talented (like themselves) and keep out the rabble.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

Not everyone who takes voice lessons has the goal of being on Broadway or making it as a singer. I am a classically-trained singer and I haven't done much other than sing along to the radio in recent years. I didn't have to pay for the lessons, but I wouldn't consider it to be a waste of my time. It's just that when I was younger, I sang year-round in choirs and happened to have fun doing it.

Oh, and while we're at it, why on earth did I take piano lessons for 12 years if I had no intention of being a professional pianist? I should have stopped wasting everyone's time, shouldn't I? Thank you, people of this thread, for showing me the light.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

Plum -- I believe you're overreacting. Not everyone is saying that the only reason to take piano/singing/acting/hell, swimming lessons is to achieve awards and recognition.

I am meeting with someone about voice lessons tomorrow because I want to improve. Not for Broadway. Not for Opera. But because when I sing Ma Nishtana during Passover, I want to sound good. But more importantly, because it's good for me to apply myself and succeed.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

I apologize. But like I said, the tone of the original post (and a few of the follow-ups) really irked me. How can you even know if you have talent until you try?

re: You have IT or you DONT.

It's very true -- I believe I have talent, and I will work to improve it, if only for my own satisfaction and my dog's entertainment.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

cathy hyatt, i think the first step would be learning how to properly construct a sentence. it's actually quite frustraiting to try and decipher people's messages when the words are hodge-podged in a melting pot of adjetives and pronouns. example:

hey guyz i was just wondering y ur massages r all like messed up n hard to read and stuff cuz it's really hard to get through all the run on sentences i mean i really want to answer your questions but it's hard when i can't really tell what your asking, but it's not just you cathy it's alot of people and i hope they read this so i don't have to take excedrin after i log off everytime thanx

re: You have IT or you DONT.

If you don't have IT, with hard work, you can get closer to IT. People with natural talent are more likely to get the big gigs, but even them, without training and discipline and work ethic will not get far in life. Those people whom you say do not have "it" can get better, and maybe get the supporting roles, the chorus parts, even be happy working in community theater or semi-professional theater.

One of my favorite lines from All That Jazz is when Gideon tells Victoria, after she's been yelled at during rehearsals and wants to quit, something to the effect of (I'm terrible at remember exact quotes) "I cannot make you a great dancer, I might not even be able to make you a good dancer, but if you stick with the show, I can make you a better dancer."

I've always believed I can't sing. I have a hard time finding my pitch, so I resigned myself to working behind the scenes, SMing, choreographing, etc. After 6 months of voice lessons, I'm getting better. Will I be Marius in Les Miz? Nope. But I feel comfortable now auditioning for chorus or smaller parts in local theaters.

You really come across harsh, and negative.....and honey, I'm glad you are not part of my life.

oh, and with that attitude....you "ain't" never gonna get it.

I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: You have IT or you DONT.

I'm gonna have to disagree with "You have it or you don't". First of all, I don't know whether the "it" you are talking about is stage presence or the ability to sing, but either way. Seriously, have you ever heard of 10% inspiration 90% persperation? You can have a little talent but with lot of work you can go a heck of a lot farther than someone with talent but no work ethic. You can work for "it".

And I agree with Plum- the original tone of your post was very snobby.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

the post came out of frustration from people on this board (and mostly off this board) who frequently talk about such things. The subject really bothers me because I personally think you either have the IF factor or you don't...and that's the only way I see it(yes I know my opinions are every one sided). You HAVE to have something...this business is not meant for everyone is all I'm saying. Please, tell me you agree. Because if you think just anyone can make it your living in the clouds. Its a harsh world out there. Everything I said may have sounded harsh but it's just the truth.

I know it sounded snobby and/or mean but frankly that's how I felt when I posted it and I don't take back anything I said. Besides the fact that I don't know any of you(well besides cathywellerstein :)) so it really doesn't matter what your personal opinion is of me...I use this board as a way to express my opinions. Everyone can have their own opinions...and if you don't agree with mine so be it. That's what I felt about it and I wanted to see what all of you felt about the subject.

fienstien...regaurding your post on how I need to "learn how to construct a proper sentence" I dunno about you but when I post or talk online I'm not going to grammatically correct my sentences. if you have the time to do that, good for you. but for your sake I will take extra time in my posts so you can easily read them :) heheh.

with that said...I completely agree with cathywellerstein's post. she's just saying what I said but of course in a nicer way. hahah

Why do we have to agree with you? Why do you necessarily want us to agree with you? I have my opinions, you have yours. I personally don't agree with what you said. I don't know why I should tell you I agree.

no dear, it's your truth, and thank God not mine

I know it sounded snobby and/or mean but frankly that's how I felt when I posted it and I don't take back anything I said.

and since you've not said your age, a direct question I asked, this answers it for me....young, VERY young.....you need to grow-up a bit

Besides the fact that I don't know any of you(well besides cathywellerstein :)) so it really doesn't matter what your personal opinion is of me...

all I know about you is you are bitter and sad......first impressions always stick

I use this board as a way to express my opinions. Everyone can have their own opinions...

yes, and there is an appropriate way to do so, and an inappropriate "angry child" way which you have so graciously shown us

and if you don't agree with mine so be it. That's what I felt about it and I wanted to see what all of you felt about the subject.

when you learn how to appropriately post questions, I will respond....Until then, you are just another angry child (mentally, as we still have not been given your age) who does not deserve my time.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

Just knowing how to carry a tune is good to know. I can't sing well but I want to tkae voice lessons becuase when I do sing I do it wrong and wind up hurting my voice so it will help me. Also help me carry out a tune. I know some people who dont have natural talent who have gone for lessons and came out better then they first were. I disagree with you. It's not wasting people's money if they want to do it.

Plum, Elphaba, and Joshua: You guys are all so awesome. re: You have IT or you DONT.

How can you possibly know if you have "it" unless you try? I think you should work your way up and see how far you go. I love theatre and I have only been doing it for a year or so. I am content doing community work because I love it. I have been singing for only a year. I plan to continue taking lessons and auditioning. I will see if I can work my way up to semi/professional auditions and if I can't, I still have something that makes me happy. This thread is very black and white. To think of where I was last year and how I am this year makes me smile. No way this time last year would I have been called back for choir solos and I know each time I audition I get better and better at it. Singing has done wonders for my self esteem and I can't imagine a day when I don't sing. Lessons are not a waste of time if they make you feel better about yourself and make you happy.
