You have IT or you DONT.

I'm sick of people saying or thinking dumb things(on this board or not) taking voice or acting lessons and how its going to make them GREAT or what not. If you don't ahev natural talent you can never be amazing. You have to have IT before anything else. No matter how much training you have it doesn't mean your going to be good enough...few people are in fact (for broadway).

So this leads me to a question...do you think ANYONE could be a singer? Because I sure don't...you HAVE to have natural talent (this goes for acting as well but most def. for singing?).

Even if you learn from a teacher the correct way to sing or what not it does not mean your voice is going to be any good.

But really I'm puzzled to the fact as to why people that I know(manyyy teens) think that if they sign up for voice lessons they will be able to sing...because that is SOOO far from the truth. I don't think people should even take lessons unless they have a natural voice. Why waste your money? really?

what are your opinions on the subject?

Harsh.

So this leads me to a question...do you think ANYONE could be a singer? Because I sure don't...you HAVE to have natural talent (this goes for acting as well but most def. for singing?).

Anyone can become a singer. It just depends on the talent whether it will be enjoyable to an audience or not.

Even if you learn from a teacher the correct way to sing or what not it does not mean your voice is going to be any good.
But your voice will most likely improve from what you had before. And that's a start.

But really I'm puzzled to the fact as to why people that I know(manyyy teens) think that if they sign up for voice lessons they will be able to sing...because that is SOOO far from the truth. I thought that vocal lessons would help me improve. They didn't. But as an instrumentalist, I understand how important a good teacher is to learn proper technique. I think I didn't improve because I didn't have the "right" teacher. Therefore, I'm currently looking for another one, because I can't always rely on BWW to be my vocal teacher.

what are your opinions on the subject?
See above.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

That's like saying, "Why bother taking piano lessons if you don't naturally know how to play it already?" I think most people have the ability to carry a tune... maybe not be have a big, brassy voice and sing into the stratosphere, but I think voice lessons can help improve most people.

And I'm just taking a wild guess that you don't believe in people pursuing their dreams?

I don't know, CM2, based on that avatar pic it looks like you've had something! re: You have IT or you DONT.
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: You have IT or you DONT.

Voice lessons can make you better, no matter what. You just need to have natural talent to get anywhere with your voice.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

joshua...r u crazy? I'm a big dreamer myself, now that WOULD be pushing it. everyone should go for what they want BUT they should also be sensible(or least have a good family who would tell them) if they were good enough because I also don;t believe people with no talent for musical theater should waste their lives away trying.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

myfairlady- exactly my point. I totally agree with. So what would be the point in taking voice lessons if you didn't ahev natural talent to go anywhere...what would you do with all that money spent sing in the shower? that's what I don't understand..haha. Because voice lessons are expensive...usually., why waste your money really?

Are you crazy? Yet again, that's like saying, "Why would you spend money on piano lessons if you're not planning on doing something with it?"

Because you want to develop a skill, that's why.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

You start to take voice lessons to take the talent you have naturally and increase it. The voice teacher can only take what you have and teach you things musically... they are not miracle workers and just because you take lessons doesn't mean that you become amazing... it just teaches you the proper techniques on how to breathe and do dynamics.

I know, BT. I look pretty stupid in that pic, don't I? I keep changing them, because I don't like any of them.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

With today's recording studio technology anyone can be made to sound acceptable, if not great, on a recording.

Singing live and in-person with just a mic, well, that's another story.

As a singer, no, I don't have it. But, I have been known to cause a few other folks to "sing out, Louise."

re: You have IT or you DONT.

I think with a lot of vocal lessons, almost anyone who isn't tone-deaf can become a competent singer. Anyway, I doubt you intended it, cathyhyatt, but the tone of your post was rather snobby. What's wrong with thinking you can become good at something? These people don't think they're already God's gift to musical theater; they think they can get better with work. Sure, people who think they can become superstars are mostly wrong, but better that they try than to just crush their hopes straight out. Not to mention that "It" is an amazingly amorphous entity, one I have my doubts you know how to determine.

You either got it or you ain't! But god forbid you actually enjoy singing. We wouldn't want to spend money on something we enjoy. Who cares if you can't sing? If you like singing, sing.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

Anyone can sing, it's more enjoyable than a talent. However, some people DO sound better than others.
I have NO formal training in voice yet I still get larger vocal parts than many people who do in musicals I audition for. If you're passionate enough you can be the best I think. I may not be the best, but I'm so passionate with it that it doesnt matter :) lol
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

re: You have IT or you DONT.

I know someone who has had years of Broadway training but just..doesnt have a good voice.
"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous
