You think gas here is expensive?

Posted: 5/29/08 at 11:17pmA lot of the stations near me have started charging about $.10 more a gallon for credit/debit card purchases. The big signs you can see from the road are only listing the lower price. You don't know until you get up to the pump what the real price is. A couple places didn't even have the higher price listed there.

bdwaygirl, they can't do that. It violates the agreement they have with the credit networks. All of them in the U.S. specifically prohibit tacking on a surcharge for card purchases. You should report them.
(side note -- it's also verboten to set a minimum for credit card purchases, but a lot of people still do it)
eta: A little primer on what merchants can and can't do. In addition to violating Visa/MasterCard agreements, it's also illegal in some states (but not New Jersey).

Yup. I'm still doing a cross-country trip this summer, but it's not going to be the originally planned 3-4 months trip, more like 6-8 weeks.
Petrol has always been higher in Europe. They rely more on intercity trains and other forms of public transportation than you do in America. But transportation is still not cheap.

Posted: 5/30/08 at 11:50amOops, looking at my own link again, they CAN offer a discount for paying in cash. But it doesn't sound like they're presenting it as such, if they're tacking on an extra charge to the advertised price.
