"Just like people think Claire Boothe Luce quoted WICKED when she wrote "No good deed goes unpunished."
Which Elphaba was she?

Posted: 7/31/10 at 11:15pmI agree with Almira, I am glad to see these individuals angry and expressive and seeking justice. I have to say I am kind of appalled that a woman's attempted rape is being remixed and put into mash-ups. Her own brother thwarted the attempt and is justifiably over the top. The people watching it are treating it like a Saturday Night Live skit. It troubles me greatly that rape and attempted rape and the laughing at a racial stereotype following a trauma are now considered fodder for comedy. We wonder why people are desensitized-if this is what we do with attempted rape in the projects, I weep for the future.

It's not the attempted rape that is the subject of the mashup, it's Antoine and his two incredible monologues. Quite by accident, the newscast completely upended the template of this kind of reportage, leaving the camera on and letting the victim and the witness talk for longer than 4 second sound-bytes. And talk and talk and talk and talk.
There was no, "But for now, the Dodson's wait in fear, and pray for justice." There was no crying. There was no implication that the terrified family is afraid the guy will come back. Instead, they detail the perp's stupidity and MOCK him. It's really quite remarkable. I honestly don't think that the reason this has gone viral is primarily because of racial stereotypes, but because of the SMASHING of gay sterotypes. That spruced up queen in a yellow blouse said he is going to beat the perp's ass and call the police while he's beating the perp's ass.
THAT is exactly who Ellen should be bringing on her show. It's so easy to get behind a teenage lesbian kicked out of her prom. But Antoine Dodson should be the spokesman for the HRC!

When this video first started getting passed around yesterday I avoided it because I thought it was going to be your typical "Let's all laugh at the stupid people" type of thing. After I finally watched it, I was GENUINELY impressed and felt like giving a standing ovation by the end.
It reminded me of when Our Goddess The Incomparable Alexyss K. Tylor first went viral. With her, the initial reaction was "Let's all laugh at the foul-mouthed black lady", but the more you listened the more you realized how brilliant she was, and that there was a whole lot of truth being spoken in a way that would be accessible to the very people who needed to hear it the most. (And I was one of those people!)
When I finally watched this video I laughed, certainly, and while the situation was a little too serious to make me believe that they wanted us to laugh WITH them, I never once laughed AT Kelly or Antoine. I LIKED them. A lot. I'm hoping that their genius handling of this averted tragedy leads to great things for them. I'd like to hear more from both of them in the future.

I think you folks are in the minority. I think a lot of people are laughing at these people.
Sorry for not having much of a sense of humor, I worked in a rape crisis center for 4 year and work tirelessly on behalf of sexual violence awareness and threads titled "Young woman almost raped. And she's very irritated about it" just rub me the wrong way. To me, that is insensitive to anyone who have ever survived a rape.
Also, the one dubbed version linked earlier has an effeminate voiced Antoine expressing upset over not being able to penetrate the attacker and that he found the attacker attractive. That is in very bad taste. What if the family were to see that? Would they feel empowered or as though people were impressed with them? Im sorry, but anyone who feels most of those remixes are celebrating Antoine and his family are in denial.

Posted: 8/1/10 at 12:15amI've never been able to get too riled up that the thought of penetrating a rapist against his will is "in bad taste." I get so Old Testament sometimes.

"...And she's very irritated about it" just rub me the wrong way
That's what sets it apart - She's not devastated, she's IRRITATED. She refuses to give it any more power than that. It's not lessening the horror of rape, it's empowering the victim.

Okay, I'll admit - I haven't watched that one. I've only seen the original video and the auto-tuned one. Unfortunately, people as a whole are going to see things differently. I see two well-spoken people in an unfortunate situation, but someone else is going to see something different. I don't know how to do anything about that.

"She's not devastated, she's IRRITATED"
You really don't know how she feels from a two minute clip. She just survived an attack and attempted rape in which her brother saved her. Reactions to such things are complex, and no one knows what she is feeling besides her.
I know most of you posters and know you are good-hearted people with great senses of humor so I'm not starting with any of you, Im more irritated with how this news clip has swelled into the viral video world and could really hurt these real people.
