Inspired by a recent breakup, and my penchant for being insanely melancholy at 3 am, I am creating mixed CDs of my favorite tearjerkers.
Let's hear yours! (This should be fun!)
A few of mine, in no special order:
"She Thinks His Name Was John" -Reba McEntire
"The Greatest Man I Never Knew" -Reba McEntire
"Gloomy Sunday" -Sarah McLaughlin's version
"Two Beds and A Coffee Machine"-Savage Garden
"I Don't Know You Anymore" -Savage Garden
"Everytime I Close My Eyes" -Vanessa Amorosi (Worth it for her low Es alone)
"I Will Never Leave You" -Side Show, OBCR (Hi, Emily!!!)
"I Can't Make You Love Me" -George Michael's version
SO many more, but this'll do for now :)
xoxo, kids!

"Once Upon a Time": (from musical ALL AMERICAN)
Once upon a time
A girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine
And said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time
Very long ago
Once upon a hill
We sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time
Now the tree is gone
How the breeze ruffled through her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn't there
We were young and didn't have a care
Where did it go?
Once upon a time
The world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours
How happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time
Never comes again
Once upon a time
Never comes again

M_E, can you EVER have a response that's less, you know, educational? What about Hanson? Or Britney? You know...the greats??
Favorite sad/depressing songs - oh lordy, Jaily. Unfortunately my breakup CD is from several years back - are there any songs for being lonely and desperate?
As for my favorite pity songs:
She F*cking Hates Me - Puddle of Mud
Give Me My Money Back (You Bitch) - Can't remember
Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
Oughta Know - Alanis
I Love Myself Today - Bif Naked
There's so, so, so many more but I'm too tired to think of any more right now. I need to be in the mood.
"Good luck returning my ass!" - Wilhemina Slater
"This is my breakfast, lunch and f***ing dinner right here. I'm not even f***in' joking." - Colin Farrell

Oh, Jaily, I'm soft and tender alright.
Just not when it comes to melancholy songs. What's the fun in those if you can't unleash your anger on the bastard who screwed you over?
"Good luck returning my ass!" - Wilhemina Slater

"Love, Look Away": (from musical FLOWER DRUM SONG)
I have wished before,
I will wish no more.
Love, look away!
Love, look away from me.
Fly, when you pass my door,
Fly and get lost at sea.
Call it a day.
Love, let us say we're through.
No good are you for me,
No good am I for you.
Wanting you so,
I try too much.
After you go,
I cry too much.
Love, look away.
Lonely though I may be,
Leave me and set me free,
Look away, look away, look away... from... me.

"A Man Doesn't Know": (from DAMN YANKEES)
Joe:
A man doesn't know what he has
Until he loses it
When a man has the love of a woman
He abuses it
I didn't know what I had
When I had my old love
I didn't know what I had
Till I said, "Goodbye, old love!"
Yes, a man doesn't know what he has
Till it is no longer around
But the happy thought is
Whatever it is he's lost
May someday once again be found.
Meg:
I know what you mean, Joe, only too well,
For I am lonely, just like you.
Lonely for my Joe.
My sweet Joe.
How really sweet I never knew.
I never really knew.
A woman doesn't know what she has
Until she loses it
When a woman has the love of a man
She abuses it
I didn't know what I had
When I had my old love
Joe:
I didn't know what I had
Till I said, "Goodbye, old love!"
Both:
Yes, a man doesn't know what he has
Till it is no longer around
But the happy thought is
Whatever it is he's lost
May someday once again be found!

Well Monk, you say po-TAO-to and I say po-TAH-to...

I didn't mean to sound nasty, like your choices should appease Me, but they're just not at all sad......I guess it's because I'm always depressed - so I like the most depressing, heart-wrenching music out there. It's soothing

Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:21amA lot of my straight buddies find Mendolsohn's "Wedding March" prettty dark and disturing, Monk...

I've always been a pretty tough cookie, but I have to say that personally, I have never, EVER in my freaking LIFE heard a song that tears one apart like "She Thinks His Name Was John". I challenge any of you to listen to it and not at least *feel* like crying, if not actually shed tears. It's one of those songs that's pretty universally destroying...Mary_Ethel's have a very specific application, and they're WONDERFUL, beautiful songs, but I suppose I see why not everyone would be particularly moved. However, get yourself in the right circumstance, and you'll be calling and thanking M-E for decades :-P
God, i'm talkative when I'm sleep-deprived.

Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:28amThanks, Jailyard. Maybe my songs ARE more "moving" than sad or depressing.

I'll always go to bat for you, Mary
That's what's so great about music...it's so personal. What makes me curl up in a ball on the floor and cry until my eyeballs bleed might just make someone else say "Um, that's kinda bringin' me down...can we listen to Britney?". To each their own! :)

Yes, Jailyard, music mirrors our VERY SOUL--and each soul is unique. Therefore, how we express ourselves via music is going to be unique as well.
P.S. You can bat for me ANYTIME--so long as I'm the ball.

Hi Jail!
I have always felt "What Now, My Love?" is a particularly depressing song.
"No one would care
No one would cry
If I should live -- or die.
What now, my love?
Now there is nothing
Only my last good-bye."
Honestly, that song is just mean its so sad.
Okay, now I have to go listen to something up-lifting. It's way too sunny outside today.

I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO LOVE U ANYMORE - BRYAN WHITE

DON'T SPEAK - NO DOUBT

Posted: 3/18/05 at 9:58amUsually, I have a hard time letting things go...and in that case, My Immortal by Evanescence works. Billy Joel's For the Longest Time also does it to me. Let's see....Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q if we're going the musical theatre route. And for its tune alone, Mancini's "Moon River" fills me up whenever I hear it.

I should stay away from most Sondheim songs when I am depressed, namely:
LOSING MY MIND from FOLLIES
WE DO NOT BELONG TOGETHER from SITPWG
NO ONE IS ALONE from ITW (I find this song really depressing, despite its positive message)
etc etc
All those "I loved this person and now I'm screwed" songs that Sondheim writes so well...

K, is that the one with "Vincent" when it sounds like she is crying as she sing "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" ?
Kills me everytime. And, damn, if her Some Enchanted Evening isn't awesome -- and I never really liked that song.

Wishing you were somehow here again, from POTO
You were once
my one companion . . .
you were all
that mattered . . .
You were once
a friend and father -
then my world
was shattered . . .
Wishing you were
somehow here again . . .
wishing you were
somehow near . . .
Sometimes it seemed
if I just dreamed,
somehow you would
be here . . .
Wishing I could
hear your voice again . . .
knowing that I
never would . . .
Dreaming of you
won't help me to do
all that you dreamed
I could . . .
Passing bells
and sculpted angels,
cold and monumental,
seem, for you,
the wrong companions -
you were warm and gentle . . .
Too many years
fighting back tears . . .
Why can't the past
just die . . .?
Wishing you were
somehow here again . . .
knowing we must
say goodbye . . .
Try to forgive . . .
teach me to live . . .
give me the strength
to try . . .
No more memories,
no more silent tears . . .
No more gazing across
the wasted years . . .
Help me say
goodbye.

Andy--here's another Judy song to slit your wrists by:
I walk around, heavy hearted and sad,
Night comes around and I'm still feeling bad,
Rain pouring down, washing every hope I had,
This pittering, pattering, beating and splattering
Dri-ives me mad!
Love! Love! Love. Love...
This misery is just...too much for me...
