K---if you like Jane Olivor, you might find Alison Moyet equally uplifting.

At the Ballet. That one gets me every time.
I agree with the above poster (Mary_Ethel) on A Man Doesn't Know.
Diary of a Homecoming Queen from Is There Life After High School is very sad/depressing. And a wonderful song!
Non-Broadway: There is a blues(?) song called Guess Who I Saw Today that has been covered by many artists.

Pretty much half of the first installment of DepressFest 05 is Evanescence, Princeton...a man after my own heart, ye are! :)
(and, yes, this was CLEARLY a shameless bump for my own thread.)

"no one has to know" from the last 5 years really depresses me!! i don't know why...
i just think it's so sad! and norbert makes it sound even sadder.
but two that are understandably depressing are "halloween" and "goodbye love" from RENT
and for the more classically minded, Act IV of La Boheme. i have to bring out the tissues every time.

I can only listen to TL5Y when I'm depressed. If I listen to it when I'm happy it drags me down like nothing else.
Other songs that dperess the hell out of me are:
"My Dogs"--Elegies
"A Little Fall Of Rain"--Les Mis
"If I Can't Love Her"--B&TB
"Caoneidh Cu Cuchulainne"--Riverdance
"Comfortable"--John Mayer (also my favorite John Mayer song)
"Daniel"--Elton John
"Into The West"--Annie Lennox
"Hallelujah"--Rufus Wainwright
"Kathleen Mavourneen"--traditional Irish song

"Merman" - TORI AMOS, written about Matthew Shephard
"The Blower's Daughter" - DAMIEN RICE
"I Will Remember You" - SARAH MCLACHLAN - the most manipulatively depressing song EVER. I get sad just thinking about it.

For some reason, I associate "I Will Remember You" with the Columbine shootings, probably because the video ran constantly around that time. And it felt like all the local radio stations ran it a lot. Same goes for her "Angel."
I think we should vote Sarah McLachlan the most depressing artist ever, don't you?

Jailyard- don't do it! UGH that song makes me sooo deeply depressed about pretty much everything about life.
"Angel" is also up there.
I'd say it was safe to vote Sarah "Most Depressing Artist."

I've always found "Behind Blue Eyes" to be a very depressing song- the original WHO version, not the mediocre Limp Bizket one.
If you want depressing, go listen to Springsteen's "Nebraska" album...most of it is extremely dark and depressing (and why I play it constantly in the car is beyond me). My friend also just sent me a song called "Incomplete" which falls under this catergory.
As for B'way- no one's said "I'll Cover You Reprise." Hands down, the saddest song in Rent. Ditto "Wishing..." from Phantom, and "Still" from Titantic.

"This Woman's Work" Kate Bush
"A Cottage For Sale" Judy Garland

"If You Go Away" Maria Friedman
Marvin Hamlish's score to "Sophie's Choice"

"Far From The Home I Love" (from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF):
How can I hope to make you understand
Why I do what I do,
Why I must travel to a distant land,
Far from the home I love.
Once I was happily content to be
As I was, where I was,
Close to the people who are close to me,
Here in the home I love.
Who could see that a man could come
Who would change the shape of my dreams?
Helpless now I stand with him,
Watching older dreams grow dim.
Oh, what a melancholy choice this is,
Wanting home, wanting him,
Closing my heart to ev'ry hope but his,
Leaving the home I love.
There's where my heart has settled long ago
I must go, I must go, I must go,
Who could imagine I'd be wand'ring so
Far from the home I love
Yet there with my love, I'm home.

"Lullaby" by Billy Joel ALWAYS makes me cry. When I was 8 or 9 and my parents were divorcing it always came on the radio and made me cry because it reminded me of my dad who I didn't get to see...it still gets me all choked up.
"I Will Remember You" - Sarah McLachlan
"Comfortable" - John Mayer
"I'll Cover You (reprise)" - RENT
"This Used to be My Playgroud" - Madonna
"Wheel" - John Mayer
"Sweetest Goodbye" - Maroon 5
"Learning to Breathe" - Switchfoot
"Cry" - Mandy Moore (shut up...)
"Goodbye" - Alicia Keys
"I'm OK" - Christina Aguilera
"So Far Away" - Carole King
I'm sure there's more...but I'm getting choked up just thinking about it so I'm gonna stop now.

^ Jeff Buckley's versionof Hallelujuah is far superior than Rufus Wainwright. Of course, the same could be said for the men too.
I think the saddest song of all time, t he one I listen to on reall y bad days, would be "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men

"Sometimes a Day Goes By" - Woman of The Year (I think?)

Tell me if I'm alone on this: Does "Baby Mine" from Dumbo just DESTROY anyone else? I don't count it as one of my favorite sad songs because I'm just emotionally shredded after I hear it.
Same goes for "Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets Take Manhattan." When I was a kid, I cried so hard at that that my mom came rushing in to the TV room because she thought I'd hurt myself.

what about there's a fine, fine line from avenue q? and on my own from les mis.
and for non-broadway...
3 doors down- here without you
backstreet boys- show me the meaning of being lonely
berlin- take my breath away
celine dion- my heart will go on
journey- open arms and faithfully
actually, pretty much every love song turns depressing when you break up.

I still watch that damn movie and get misty-eyed from that song, lol as sad as that may sound.
