Where exactly does the art come in?

I'm pro-choice, but this is nuts.

re: abortion as art

Yeah, my question is, because she has forced herself to have so many miscarriages, will she be able to actually have a child now? It just seems like the type of thing for something like that to happen. I know most women when they have one are devastated. It just doesn't seem fair that some women who really want to have children, have the worst of luck, but then people go out and do things like this, and think people will not judge them.

re: abortion as art

Emotionally, I'm disgusted and honestly hope that when she decides she wants to be pregnant, it's not so easy for her.

Intellectually, I'm trying to be analytical. There are many women out there who treat the right of abortion irresponsibly by using it as a form of birth control. But the difference between that and the Yalie artist is intent, and in the end it still crosses some line or another.

For someone who is trying to create awareness, she certainly gives fuel to the pro-lifers cause.

But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."

Oh, please. You can argue that about a painting or a sculpture, but videotaping abortions and displaying the bloody remnants is for the explicit purpose of being provocative.

The only "discourse" this is going to provoke is going to be amongst anti-abortion activists who will use this for propaganda for years to come.

re: abortion as art

Read the article I linked to. It is probably all a scam, as it is very unlikely she became pregnant at all. But, even if she wasn't ever pregnant, the idea of it is repulsive. She should be ashamed of herself.
Was she pregnant ever?

re: abortion as art

Things I can't help but wonder -

What were these legal and herbal abortifacients she took? Do other women know about them?

How many times did she do this over the course of nine months and how soon after insemination did she induce abortion? Plenty of women have first trimester miscarriages and don't even realize it - how was she able to abort for the camera multiple times over the course of a relatively short time?

ETA - That link Preist posted asks similar questions. Something just doesn't add up here.

re: abortion as art

So wait...this took place over the span of nine months??? Not much time there to pack in multiple pregnancies, is there. When I had an early miscarriage, it took my body a little while to sort itself out. Maybe she knows a secret, but I'm guessing Shvarts is full of shvit.
