Posted: 9/4/05 at 1:33amI've heard about rapes and bullet-riddled corpses, but not this. I really hope it's just an urban legend.

Yes. This is very odd to read.

How very...depressing. I'm not a huge Randall Robinson fan (I read that book that they mentioned) but...eek.
I do wish he would cite some source though, 'cause I haven't heard about this anywhere else either.

I thought this might happen, considering the survivors were already desperate enough to steal a TV on the 1st day.
(Ironically, I watched ALIVE today. Wonder what those folks behind the History Channel were thinking.)

As absolutely horrific as it would be to imagine people having to resort to cannabalism, it isn't the same as rape or desecration of bodies in this instance. It's the ultimate desperation for survival.
And, if this is true, it's just unimaginable to think of being put in that position.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 2:10amI have serious doubts as to the validity of this. I think the context in which it was said was full of alot of anger, fear and sadness....

It's seriously not a bad thing... If you're hungry and desperate, you'll do anything.
I did a paper over cannibalism for my senior research paper. Mostly about the Donner Party.

Is it illegal to eat someone after they die?

Posted: 9/4/05 at 2:13amYes; I'm pretty sure corpse desecration of any kind is illegal. I hope, if this is true, no one catches kuru or anything.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 2:16amNo prosecutor in his or her right mind would charge someone who ate a corpse out of desperation in a situation like this. And remember that this is all about as confirmed as the "Roger Clemens and Johnny Damon have tested positive for steroids" story a little while back.

This is what it says now:
"UPDATE: The claim in the first sentence in my post was incorrect. I had been told this was happening, but these claims have turned out to be unsubstantiated. I therefore retract them -- but stand behind everything else I wrote without reservation."

I'm not sure where he heard of such things, but I was immediately transported to the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and the way they portrayed the natives.
This is more of the same nonsense propogated by those who wish to characterize dark-skinned peoples as cannibals, animals, subhumans who must be taught the "proper" way to live.
Nobody accused the tsunami victims of cannibalism as I recall.
And some say this has nothing to do with race.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:15pmDo you know who Randall Robinson is lildogs? He's the last person who's going to be readily accusing the African-American population of doing "barbaric" things because some racist white guy said so.
#21re: cannibalism in the big easy
Posted: 9/4/05 at 12:27pmHe's not accusing anyone--he's reporting something he heard. And it is possible for a black man to be racist....and yes, I know who he is--i read his report too. You don't know this guy--he could be the black Larry King for all you know.

Pinguin - he reported it without confirmation. He's no better than whoever made up the ridiculous story.
Perhaps the time he spent on his rant could have been better spent on research.
