does anyone else have an "designer breed" dog? (a cockapoo, yorkiepoo, labradoodle, etc)
we have a lhatese (lhasa apso/maltese) and i hate telling people he's a "lhatese"
we just say he's a mutt.
every dog in his obedience class is some sort of cross... there's a dorkie (a dachshund/yorkie) and a yorkiepoo (yorkie/poodle) in his class with him.
what kind of designer breed dogs do you guys have?
and what do you think of them? are they really designer breeds or are they mutts?

Truman is a Maltese and Pomeranian mix, which some people call a "Malti-Pom." Personally, I prefer the butcher sounding "Malteranian."
I don't think of Truman as a designer dog, nor a mutt. He's just "Truman."

Posted: 10/23/07 at 12:21pmI think there's a fine line between a designer breed and a mutt, but the ones you mention seem fairly legit to me. I have a goldendoodle, and... he's perfect. Although, to be honest, goldendoodles are supposed to be "friendly like a golden retriever and smart like a poodle," and, well... ours is definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. He's basically like a slimmed-down golden with curly fur and a ton less shedding, which is AOK with me.

well, from what i read online, lhatese (which i didn't even know existed untill i got one) are supposed to have:
"Lhasa traits include devotion to their human family, affection towards people they knows (and leeriness of strangers), alertness as a watchdog and protectiveness of places they consider "home", and some apprehension of small children and other dogs. Their gentle nature, well-mannered behavior, and propensity for cuddling are examples of their more Maltese-like characteristics."
manny is affectionate (when he wants to be), he's not at all gentle or well mannered, and not big on cuddling unless he wants to.
although he wasn't bred for anything... he happened because the person we got him from didn't fix her male lhasa apso before letting it run around and play with her boyfriend's female maltese.
sometimes we call manny a "mop" instead of a "lhatese" ... it's more fitting to him since he looks like a mop.

DBP, I've been meaning to tell you that Truman is a cutie! (I'm assuming that's him in your avatar)
I just want to cuddle with him!

Thanks Taz! That, indeed, is Truman in the avatar. It is one of my favorite photos. He hangs out in that chair looking out the window. I had to climb under my desk to get the right angle to take it! There are quite a few more photos of him on my myspace page, if you care to look.

I have a labradoodle, an F1, that's him in my avatar. We like to call him a designer mutt.
at about a year
and at a couple months

My mom has a 15 year old maltipoo and a 6 year old labradoodle. So she had the designer dogs before most did. :)
And my best friend Christine has a jug (jackrussell and pug mix). Is that not the worst name for a breed ever though? JUG, lol.

She's just a cocker spaniel but she is unique because she is black and white and the not the "normal" color for cocker spaniels.
I'm pleased to introduce Molly:
(She is 12 yrs old)

My avatar is Grover, our 3 1/2 year old Labradoodle. He's a first-gen, is still as crazy as he was at six months, and sheds somewhat. Less than a regular lab, but more than second gen 'doodles.
I'd put a couple more pix but have NEVER been able to figure out BWW's picture uploads. And I hate photo hosting sites...

We only have purebreds, thank you very much.
Really, though, we have a fabulous Basset Hound and, like SweetQ, a black and white Cocker Spaniel.

Posted: 10/24/07 at 3:35pmJust a few weeks ago we got our Morkie puppy (Maltese/Yorkie...most annoying breed name ever though.) She's adorable. We've also got a purebreed Yorkie. The only difference I can tell so far is the slightly longer, softer coat of the Morkie.

Does that count?
