I just do not understand emo. Every song sounds the same to me and I've read some of the lyrics. They are just stupid.
"I see myself inside you, you dream the dreams that I do,
you're still searching for these answers, they're not inside your wrist" --What the hell is that?! Since when is suicide and being morbid cool?
I agree with you completely. I am tired of the emo craze. The song lyrics are mass produced and are written so broadly so teenagers don't have to look so far into the lyrics to find something "profound". There are so many Emos at my school it makes me kinda sick. Here it is mostly a bunch of well off kids who think its cool to have problems so they pretend that their every day trials are more important than everyone else's. Ah! I just rambled.

emo= emotional, the sensi-kid movement.
Think of early teens in argyll sweaters, writing poetry and brooding over how much their love live suck.
i'm still a teenager and I don't even know what Emo is! lol weird...is it only really popular out west or something?
I'm out east ,actually, but I have friends in Ohio who don't know what it is either.
Yeah, I'm out west and I've heard of it. I think it's mostly a 20-somethings subculture. I was exposed to it when I went to a gay bar for the first time, and made a quick beeline outta there.
I really like a lot of emo music: Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. When I was in high school, the music was very bad, so I'm happy that the kids today have something better to listen to.

So I am not an old fart? Well that is good news!
Generalizations are rarely a good idea.
Please note that there are people in the world who hate "showtunes", even though the genre contains many contrasting styles of music.
"Emo" is the same way.
I am a big fan of Something Corporate, which falls under the "emo" genre.
But honestly, emo is very vague...
Something Corporate music is brooding, but not to the point of suicide.
"And you don't want to be here in the future
So you say the present's just a pleasant interruption to the past
And you don't want to look much closer
'Cause you're afraid to find out all this hope
You had sent into the sky by now had crashed
And it did because of me
And then you bring me home
Afraid to find out that you're alone
And i'm sleeping in your living room
But we don't have much room to live" (Something Corporate, "Konstantine")
And often it's lighter, even to the point of being funny.
"I know you don't care about me
I'm sure when all is said and done
And I go home feeling lonely
You will have had your fun
Do you even remember?
I kissed a drunk girl
Why do I do these things I do to myself?
I kissed a drunk girl
And I'm sure I could have been anybody else" (Something Corporate, "Drunk Girl")
I just wanted to point out that not all emo is masochistic existentialist dirges.
Also wanted to say that Something Corporate is awesome. :)
FloweryFriend is right. There is some great emo music out there. Death Cab For Cutie (and, by extension, The Postal Service) are absolutely wonderful. I find the term "emo-boy" or "emo-music" somewhat sexist; it's just the male equivalent of female singer-songriters like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. Why can't men be sentimental or self-reflective rather than angry and loud?
A sample of the quirky and often poetic lyrics to Death Cab For Cutie's "Death of an Interior Decorator":
Gravitated towards a taste
For foreign films and modern plays
But that machine could only
Bend to squares five to six times
Before your fingers came unwired...
I'm a big fan of emo, why does it "have to end?" I'm not one to get so wrapped up in the traditional emo-esque fashions, but I love most of that genre (Bright Eyes is AMAZING) and most of the boys are cute...haha.
Did you read the piece in The New Yorker about Conor? I'm so glad he's finally getting the recognition he so richly deserves.
My friends are always trying to get me to listen to emo music. It's never really appealed to me. The so called "Emo" kids at my school are an interesting bunch. Guys dressing in REALLY tight girl jeans and dressing all feminine is kinda interesting....
some emo is INCREDIBLE
...but some is just downright annoying
"I think it was the Korean tour or something. They were all frickin' asian!" -Zoran912
have to agree jwei! Conor has been in every single magazine/newspaper i have picked up the past month. Good for him.
how many emo kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
none...they just sit in the dark and cry
I have to agree with Flowery Friend.
And Something Corporate is my favorite band of all time. Just saw them live last week!
Emo gets a very bad rap for being overly sensitive and so fourth. Sometimes certain bands may go over board, but Emo is a VERY broad category. Many bands are grouped into the Emo category, simply because they don't have their own.
The difference between a band like Something Corporate and say, Alkaline Trio is extremely large. Not all Emo is the same.... It's just easy to throw it all together. For instance, when someone says "Show-Tune" the general population may think "Grease" or "Annie" when there is obviously so much else out there, and more to the genre.
I'm a big Emo fan and would hardly classify myself as depressed, constantly angry at my parents, moody, whiny.
"how many emo kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
none...they just sit in the dark and cry"
Oh, Catie. I'm still laughing at that one. Hehe...
*sigh* Emo kids. I can't deal. "My life sucks, so I'm going to write music about it and depress everyone in the room because gee, if *I* can't be happy, why should they??" Go eat a freaking burger.
Maybe that was harsh, but come on. Enough's enough. I'll admit, I'm a HUGE Brand New fan, but that's it. Everything sounds the same. I'm not usually one to criticize something like this, but it's such a huge thing at my school and I hate it, because it's just a fad. Last year everyone wanted to be a punk rocker. Now everyone wants to be an emo kid. What's next?
Showtunes, I'm telling you.
What is with the bad rap that the emo-genre gets? And the handful of kids that dub themselves "emo" generally aren't. Most of the music is brillant, and just because someone's really into the style doesn't meean you're suicidal.
Mef, what's your favorite Bright Eyes song?
