And for the record, Americans usually get their paperwork done and approved in about a year. People in China or India usually take 3+ years, so I think you're okay.

Canada is fantastic, the people are friendly and well-read (it's not Americans' fault that you guys get such biased news - you'd be surprised what the world is REALLY like if not for your "free press" propoganda), we've got Whistler and ocean and clean air...and did I ever tell you how our hockey teams and beer is much, much better?

Can American physicians and attorneys practice in Canada (with a work permit) or are they required to take their respective Canadian boards? I'm guessing the latter is the case.

Not sure about US physicians in terms of being able to practice here...not entirely sure about lawyers either (I'm in pre-law hoping to practice in NYC eventually, so I'm more familiar with the other way around), but I'm pretty sure you can have an American law degree but you'll have to write the Canadian Bar exam to be allowed to practice here. And yeah, you'll need a permit, which might be hard to find since we've got too low of a lawyer:public ratio as it is.

But come up here anyway! Your dollar will go far!

Trust me... I'm all for it! We actually attempted to honeymoon in Canada, but SARS forced us to change our plans at the last minute (this was May 2003).

I remember reading in a different thread that you were studying or taking (I can't recall) the LSAT? Did you take it yet? If not, best of luck!

Yeah, I took the LSAT, choked on it, so now I'm doing Kaplan courses and writing it again in December. These logic games will be the death of me!

Well, sorry about that re: SARS, but we figured that since we just began our life together as husband and wife that we might as well make sure we have our health. We will plan a trip through Canada though, without a doubt. It is a beautiful country!

I am not a lawyer (I'm a biomedical engineer doing my PhD now), but my husband has been practicing since 2002. In general, he really enjoys his work. His firm is extremely ethical, as is he (he has no choice... he'd have to answer to me!). However, there are some attorneys who are corrupt and compromise the reputation of good attorneys. He began his law career in criminal defense and is now working as a victim's advocate (some personal injury, but more altruistic than general pi work). He loved law school.

Kaplan is the way to go. I'm sure you have the innate ability to really do well, but it gets you to practice and teaches you how to take it.
