gay marrige what do you think?

re: gay marrige

I think it should be legal. Though people try very hard, I don't how they can call it constitutional to deny it.

re: gay marrige

I should be able to get married.

Untimately, it doesn't affect straight people.....

re: gay marrige

I'm surprised the question would even come up on this board. Anyway, I've never heard a coherent or remotely reasonable argument as to why it should be illegal.

I think it's shameful. It goes against nature and the laws set forth in this great land of ours.

If "the Dubya" is so concerned about the institution of marriage and the American Family, why doesn't he propose a constitutional amendment to ban divorce? Divorce does more damage to the family than two loving and committed same sex partners getting married.

re: gay marrige

Duh, Albin. Because that would take away people's constitutional rights to do what they want!

re: gay marrige

Question for the year:

Exactly how does gay marriage negatively affect straight marriage? If gay people get legally married, do all straight marriages become null and void? Do they immediately lose their rights as married couples? Other than the religious aspects (of which we are supposed to have religious freedom AND separation of church and state, so it is moot), what is the mysterious "threat" to heterosexuals and families?

As long as they are hetero...

Spouse and child abusers are allowed to marry.
Rapists are allowed to marry.
Serial killers are allowed to marry.
Terrorists and assassins are allowed to marry.

Yet Homosexuals are a threat? Would someone PLEASE ask Bush this question at a debate or press conference???

I just bought "Why Marriage Matters" by Evan Wolfson yesterday. I am only on the first chapter but so far it is pretty interesting. It talks a lot about the history of marriage in different cultures and the involvement of the church and government. It also talks about all of the different legal rights and protections that married people are privy to that unmarried folks aren't. Very interesting read, I'll keep you posted as I continue to read.

There is no reason to deny gay marriage. No one is taking the rights of heterosexuals away...and it allows gays to have the same property rights and marriage commitment as straight people.

The thing it would do is open the door for public monies to be used in the support of gay marriages through benefits. The opposition says they don't want their money used to support that which they find immoral, and use polls to show that a majority of Americans agree with this due to religious conviction. It boils down to letting majority Christian perspective dictate social policy. Interestingly, they don't have a problem taking gay American's money and using it to support their own social agenda. If you take religion out of it, there is no arguement. But 'taking religion out of it' is exactly what the greatest schism in this country is - if not the world.

I'm so pleased someone finally started a conversation about gay marriage. I've been wanting to opine on this for a while and have not have the opportunity.

Gay marriage makes me want to vomit in my mouth.

Seriously, if you want to really understand about the history of marriage, read Evan's book, but don't stop there. You need to immediately read John Boswell's work on the subject: his "Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe" (Vintage Press, 1995) is brilliant as is his "Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality" (Univ. of Chicago Pr., 1981).
