I was hoping to get some recommendations of good places to listen to jazz in the city. I was thinking about the Village Vanguard...any ideas??

Asked my friend who has been to a lot of them. Here are his suggestions.

His favorite is "Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center"

Garage (I have been here. Had dinner and listened to Jazz. The food was good and so was the jazz)

I usta go to Iridium but Birdland has a great variety of performances not just jazz.

I enjoy going to Birdland every once in a while. They get some really wonderful people there and they have performances usually around 11 or 11:30 so it's perfect if you're getting out of a show (since it's right near all theaters) and want to sit and have a drink and hear some music.

I love Dizzys too. It overlooks Columbus Circle/Central Park. The food is fantastic and the jazz is very good.

However, for free you can go down to the East Side to Jules, a great jazz restaurant (french cuisine) and no cover. It is just the sort of place I like to go for good Jazz: Not too divey, lovely ambiance, wonderful food and no cover.
