My friends and I started a critically successful theatre company (though not financially, but that is a really long story) in Houston years ago. It actually started when we collaborated on writing a new musical review based on collection of unpublished poems utilizing the individual talents of each of the actors involved. Most importantly, we had our own space. It started in a one-car garage behind a house and had a total of thirteen seats with a tiny apartment above used for tech. Thus, The Little Room Downstairs was born. With word of mouth and effective marketing (too bad they couldn't carry through the marketing, but another long story), we played two full seasons there and earned enough money to move to a larger space, and then add a second space, form a board, create a mission statement, and earn our non-profit status. And that was the first GLBT theatre company in Houston. We won numerous awards and became pretty well-known (in Houston) for a while leading a trend of GLBT theatre companies in Houston, but it all came to a bitter end, which leads me to this word of advice...
COLLABORATION is the key. One person cannot (and should not) do it alone. If you can assemble a group of people who share a single vision (your mission or concept), yet have the individual talents to make each aspect of a production happen, you're good to go.
Oh, and it helps if you can all work for free for a few years. It takes a long time to earn anything from it, so you all must be completely devoted to be rewarded artistically, not financially.

"I called the school and told them I wasn't going to do it anymore."
Did they cry and BEG you to stay? I mean, we all remember how you said it was your DREAM to go there and nothing could stand in your way.
How sad.
How many acts IS your novel?

Posted: 4/4/06 at 10:29pmI thought it was because after you got accepted you found out how much it cost and told them thanks, but they would have to find someone else to make their spaghetti. So I wouldn't say you "quit" you just never started.

Posted: 4/4/06 at 10:51pmI do hope that children&farts writes his own press releases for the theater. We'll all have a grand time reading them. A lapse of syntax here. A misplaced modifier there. Oh, it will be grand, grand, grand!!!!!!!!

I want to start a theatre company too! My vision, is to allow all the compulsive liars on this board to write their own scripts and act out all their fantasies. My first project would be to adapt Captain O's novel into a play. I mean afterall, it's already written in Acts...so how hard could it be to adapt? C&A would of course direct.
