Yipes. I LOATHE Ryan Murphy's new show.
I've watched the first 3 episodes and I'm really astounded that some really recognizable and respected actors (Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts, Ed O'Neil, Naomi Watts for starters) have signed on to this vapid, misogynistic, insulting project. I keep looking for reasons re: "why?", "is there a statement of some kind being made?", or "does Ryan Murphy really hate both women and his audience this much?"
ALL of the female actresses have been reduced to playing vapid stereotypes that are focused on their appearance (clothing, make-up and jewelry), money, and an adolescent notion of "girl-power". One interior scene goes so far OTT as to have Kim Kardashian costumed in a fur coat while lounging on a sofa in front of a roaring fireplace. ...and this show takes place in Los Angeles.
Some of the actresses have naturally exaggerated physical characteristics which Murphy makes certain to feature on camera via wardrobe choices and camera focus (i.e., Kardashian's derriere and Nash-Betts' breasts).
The last straw for me was Jessica Simpson's guest appearance in Ep. 3. where her character's lips are so artificially over-plumped that some of her dialog is near unintelligible. Later in the episode, there is a flashback of Simpson's character before her augmentation had been applied, making it obvious that Simpson underwent a lip-filler procedure in order to fulfill the physical requirement for the role. That disgusts me.
NOTHING in this show is remotely real. Not the plots, not the characters, not the dialog, certainly not the women.... Is this Murphy's experiment to see how far OTT he can go before his audience changes the channel?
I feel like I must be missing something about the reason for this show's existence, and why so many of its featured actors have signed on to do it.
It's embarrassing you even watched it honestly.

I want you to hold my hand... it's prosthetic makeup...

There is no doubt I need to hold somebody's hand after watching that horror show...
The nose and eyes were obvious prosthetics (the tip of her nose was particularly obvious). You could be right about the lips, but it wouldn't make sense that so much of the prosthetic work was so obvious, yet the lips be undetectable.
Also, Simpson appears at the end of the episode with her bee-sting lips, but not as swollen as her initial appearance in the episode. If her lips were an applied prosthetic, wouldn't they match (for continuity's sake) the same bee-sting level as the previous scene? I can imagine how a saline injection would reasonably be absorbed and "deflate" by the time a second scene was filmed at a later time (or that Simpson might refuse to undergo additional injection for continuity w/o the close-up shot used in the previous scene).
Also, I noticed that all of the female leads on this show are also Executive Producers. I think I feel even worse (yes, Sutton - I am ashamed for all of us...).

Lip Fillers are not saline. Saline would be absorbed back into the body in a matter of hours. Lip Filler lasts for 6 months or more. I'm not questioning whether she has filler. She's a celebrity in Hollywood, the odds are very good. She just did not get insane lip injections for this show. She got prosthetics put on (including her lips). Then they filmed the other scenes with her normal lip filler.
It's occurred to me that this show might be an incarnation of the "American Horror Story" franchise, but they're waiting for a surprise reveal of some kind later, down the road.
It would explain why the characters are so grotesque and why so many aspects of the show walk just over the line of "frighteningly bad". It could also explain why all the women agreed to not only to be cast, but to also executive produce this project. It might also be a reason why Sarah Paulson (who received praise for her work in the AHS franchise) is getting less screen time than the other women right now. Maybe they're holding back with her in anticipation of what's to come...
Maybe the secret is that

At some point these actors need to be held accountable for drawing us into this trash.
Youre blaming the show for you logging on, clicking the show, pressing play and watching it? Yeah no. Hold yourself accountable for watching stupid, uninspired, juvenile garbage. Brilliant shows are all around us, pick one.
