I need to repalce my desktop computer. It's a Dell computer running Windows XP that I have had for about 11 years now. It is starting to give me problems and is slowing down. I'm thinking of buying an iMac. I heard Apple is coming out with a new iMac computer sometime this year. Has anyone else heard this or know when it is coming out? Also, any advice, both good and bad, from those of you that own an iMac?

i had an HP desktop and laptops for maybe 10+ years before I decided to buy my iMac and i LOVE IT! although it took some getting a little used to from PC to MAC the ease and use of using the system is much more easier... i always tell people.. there's a reason why Macs are more expensive... i've also never once had a problem with viruses and other such bugs... after three years my iMac still runs just as fast as the day i bought it

Once you go Mac, you never go back.

The hubby and I haven't gone Mac yet, but #2 son (currently grad student) really likes his Modbook, which is a MacBook with a Wacom tablet built into the screen.

I can sum up the difference in one word:

Intuitive

PCs are difficult to use, they get viruses a lot, they slow down, crash, and crawl to a halt, and things aren't always where you expect them to be. They aren't "logical," despite all of the advancements in home computers.

Macs are intuitive, which is why they're easier to learn and operate. If you don't know where something is or how it functions (I don't mean fancy software, but basic computer stuff), you can almost always figure it out by logic and intuition. They "make sense" to computer users, and that's why people have a much better experience on them. It's well worth the added cost.

Going from PC to Mac is easy. The learning curve only lasts a few days to a week max. Going the other way, I've seen people freak out. Mac users who had to use a PC. Their heads usually explode and they take to drink quickly.

The default settings on the latest Mac OS actually reversed many of the intuitive actions that longtime users were used to. It was frustrating. Luckily, they can be changed, but not in the most logical or intuitive way imaginable.

Namo; Am I correct in assuming you are talking about Lion? I had some serious issues with tons of software being incompatible after I did the upgrade. I had to shlep my desktop to the Sherman Oaks Galleria Apple Store. But after 30 minutes with the really hot Genius named Agustin, all problems were resolved and I left feeling like I had a brand new computer. Still having issues with Vuze and other file sharing sites since then. But that might not have anything to do with anything.

Push;
If you buy your computer at a apple store you should really take advantage of all the free classes you can get. If you are buying a desktop they will lend you a laptop to use during class.

Yeah, I'm talking about Lion. Where suddenly the basic scroll movement was suddenly reversed. The opposite of intuitive.

Thanks so much for all your responses. Although I have never owned a Mac, I did use one at work before I lost my job of 23 years last July due to the company relocating. I agree that a Mac is easier than a PC but could not justify spending the money until my PC had to be replaced. I really wish the new iMac was already out but I'll willing to wait if it's going to be soon. I was planning on taking the free classes at the Apple store Dame. That seems like it will be well worth it. The only downfall to switching from PC to Mac for me is that I will have to repurchase software. I am a graphic designer so I pretty much use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for everything and they are not cheap! The good news is that Adobe just released new versions of all of them so the timing is perfect to upgrade my Adobe Creative Suite software to the Mac version.

Any one have a good suggestion of a photo editing software that's not outrageously expensive from the app store?

I bought a refurbished iMac and it was a great value and I've had no problems. Paying full price would be too much for me. check daily for great deals but dont think too long-they dont last. It was like buying new.

ucjr-if you know someone who is a college student have them buy photoshop for you. It runs like 150 for students.

So I am installing the latest Lion update right now. I hope this helps with some of the issues I have been having. Interestingly enough.. this update was not available when I clicked on the "update software". But was available when I went to the App store. Anyone done this yet? Better?
