Why would anyone spend so much money on a first generation product?
Wait to buy.
Does that mean you don't want it next week for your birthday?
No way am I going to spend that much on the first generation iPhone. Plus I love my Treo.
I was always taught not to buy anything first generation. Always wait for them to work out the kinks.
Plus something much better always seems to come out six months later. I still want one sooooooo bad though.
It just makes common sense to wait. And the price will go down and also hopefully more providers will have the service besides AT&T.
I want one so bad too... but I'm gonna wait until it goes down.
No sense in buying something for $500 when it'll be $250 in six months.
And of better quality.
Um... people buy first gen stuff all the time. Most software based products never become bugfree.
That too, Dame.
Software isn't $500 and doesn't come with a lifetime (or so I heard) contract.
Yeah.. there are a lot of misinformed people out there. Things never become bug free. But they run much more smoothly and have a lot less kinks if you wait. There is also the huge price difference. Apple said in its convention that the price will go down drastically.
They better. $500 is a lot of money to be spending on a phone.
But this is from a guy who bought $400 sun glasses.
Software is $500(+up) and there isn't a contract, but there are yearly upgrades that keep people hooked.
It's not like Apple is putting an inferior/untested product on the market. This phone has been in development for years. This is their highest profile product since the iPod. It could create a lot more cross-over Mac-to-PC buyers. It also can create a new business for the company.
I think waiting for a decrease in price and alternative contracts from AT&T is wise. From the reviews I've read I can't imagine much changing other than battery life and memory. Which are now top of the line. Those will obviously come in time.
I'm very excited about having a wifi phone.
No thanks. I'm holding out for iTunes The Musical.
I really want one of these...and I just came into some unexpected money today, so right now pretty much the only thing stopping me is that I am super-happy with Verizon...I don't even care so much anymore about the first generation factor, I just really want one of these. :)
I really want one as well, but definitely will wait for a 2nd generation. I hope the prices do drop, but I'm surprised Apple said that the price would go down drastically. Apple doesn't seem to really have sales. I guess the price of ipods have come down a bit, but the sales are much higher for ipods than the iphone will ever be. And I think AT&T has an exclusive contract for 6 yrs or something, so don't expect to see it at verizon anytime soon.
I think the coolest thing is that Apple is setting good and important technology trends.
Usability on current cellphone is my biggest complaint and at the very least there will be a movement towards simpler interfaces.
The Wifi deal is the coolest because it's freakin free.
"I'm gonna wait until it goes down."
Good luck with that.
Mejusthaving fun.. read the article:
"The iPhone is based on slower, 2G, or second-generation, wireless phone technology and has limited memory of 4 or 8 gigabytes, far less than the 30 to 80GB in full-size iPods."
"Once Apple makes an upgraded iPhone, Golvin predicts the price of the current model will be whacked to $299 or so. "That will allow a much wider audience to buy it."
"Michael Gartenberg, a vice president at JupiterResearch, says the iPhone will get better. "Like anything that comes to the market, consumers know that if they wait, it will always become cheaper, faster, better and more robust."
And Mister Matt; your wrong . Apples products have been wonderful. Ipods, ITV, all their computers. Wonderful. No complaints here. One just has to buy wisely.
Our next computer is going to be a Mac.
And I loved my iPod.
First of all the iPhone is not BASED on 2G technology the phone CONNECTS to AT&Ts Edge network. Connecting to the faster 3G network will not have any effect on the hardware.
If I had a nickel for everyone who predicted what Apple was going to do over the number of years that I've been an Apple consumer I would be a very rich man today.
People at Apple state that most changes to the iPhone in the near future will come as software upgrades and not changes to the hardware.
Pab;
I hate to correct you.. but I was at the Apple convention in San Francisco and there will be slight changes to the hardware. Also.. are you saying that all the articles you can google that state that it is based on the 2g technology are wrong? Just asking.
And I think AT&T has an exclusive contract for 6 yrs or something, so don't expect to see it at verizon anytime soon.
Five years- and Apple is banned from developing a CDMA version during that time. At least so says USA Today...Yeah, I know if I want an iPhone I am going to have to dump Verizon, but I just can't yet. And plus I had horrible horrible horrible at&t experiences in the past.
Maybe by the time the second generation iPhones come out I'll be able to dump Verizon.
USA Today article
Yeah.. I wouldn't be happy about switching to AT&T.

Switching to AT&T is the only thing I am unhappy about with the iPhone. Even then, some users have been reporting that there seems to have been a significant boost in the EDGE network speeds in the past 24 hours. Other than that, many of the recent Apple 1st Gen. releases have been relatively bug free... at least flaws that I can live with. I bought my bf the first gen. iPod and to this day, it still works except the battery life isn't as long. However, Apple has had years to develop battery life so even if the iPhone battery is not replaceable, it is significantly better than most out in the market today.
One thing to take note of though is that iPod prices have never really gone down... the capacity and features have just gone up. So if you wait, the prices will likely still hover in the $500-$600 range and not in the $300 range some predict.
