Switching to AT&T is the only thing I am unhappy about with the iPhone. Even then, some users have been reporting that there seems to have been a significant boost in the EDGE network speeds in the past 24 hours. Other than that, many of the recent Apple 1st Gen. releases have been relatively bug free... at least flaws that I can live with. I bought my bf the first gen. iPod and to this day, it still works except the battery life isn't as long. However, Apple has had years to develop battery life so even if the iPhone battery is not replaceable, it is significantly better than most out in the market today.

One thing to take note of though is that iPod prices have never really gone down... the capacity and features have just gone up. So if you wait, the prices will likely still hover in the $500-$600 range and not in the $300 range some predict.

One only has to look at Apple's pricing history to realize that the iPhone won't be coming down in price until

a) a year or two
b) a newer model becomes available

ALSO, there are some sites that are saying that there could be a software upgrade to 3G but Apple has not commented on that. Other sites are saying that next week Apple will announce the iPhone for Europe and those pones will have to be 3G.

Mark Falato, one of Spring Awakening's producers (go ahead- insert # of producers joke here) was quoted in the NY Times story about his iPhone purchase...

“Have I drank the Kool-Aid?” said Marc Falato, 42, a Broadway producer who got in line at the Fifth Avenue store around 8 a.m. today. “I think maybe to a certain extent. After all, you can order it online tonight and get it delivered in three to five business days. So I guess I bought into the hype.”

sorry im a bit late on in the conversation, but i really want one! Living in the UK i won't be able to buy one over the counter for another couple of months yet, so if i buy it online now it will cost me about £250 which i think is ok, seeing as how i've actually speny more money on going to the theatre, and because i am going away travelling in a few weeks i would like one before i go, even if it is first generation.

Consider also that Apple engineers already are hard at work on iPhone 2.0.

Modern cell networks use third-generation (3G) standards that are five to 20 times faster than that in the iPhone. Jobs said the chips to make a 3G iPhone weren't available when they designed the iPhone; but they are now, and are in some competitors' less-featured but faster phones.

It also skimps on storage. The $600 iPhone comes with 8 gigabytes of storage, enough for 2,000 songs or 16 episodes of "Heroes." A $250 video iPod can handle 7,500 songs or about 25 hours of movies.

You can bet that iPhone 2.0, probably available within the next year, will be faster and have more storage - probably for the same price.

The idea is amazing - but everything I've read shows too many problems still. Plus, I'm starting to fill my 80 gig ipod - there's no way I could go back to 4 or 8 gigs! Give it a couple of years - these things will be as common as ipods now, but buying now just doesn't make sense to me.

Just got off the phone with a couple of friends who bought one last night. Apparently activating the phone is turning into a nightmare. AT&T wasn't ready to handle the 3 million sold (surprise) so activation is delayed. Apparently a lot of customers have had their old phone turned off and are still waiting for the iPhone to be activated. Welcome to AT&T.

"AT&T wasn't ready to handle the 3 million sold (surprise) so activation is delayed."

They only had 6 + months of hype and publicity. How could they have possibly been prepared?

While they're waiting for AT&T to activate their service, might I suggest one of these? I hear they're very reliable and come in a variety of colors.

Well that really confuses me.. because everything I've read said you don't activate through ATT but you hook it up to iTunes to activate..

Could it be an APPLE issue, not ATT?

You do use iTunes to activate it but it still has to go through AT&T. AT&T has to process it and activate the phone.

Speaking as the ex-owner of two iPods (one a prize, one a gift), I can speak with confidence that both were overpriced (had I paid anything for them), short-lived, non-versatile, user-unfriendly pieces of junk.

Maybe you just got unlucky? I speak as the owner of an old-school, 3rd generation, 40gb *beast* of an iPod, that I got for free back in (2003?) that I am still using to this day (knock wood)- I have had to replace the headphones once, but I just chalked that up to being exposed daily to the elements of the streets of NY. :) Seriously, though, short-lived and user-unfriendly are the last two adjectives I would use...

And- I am a PC gal. I am contemplating getting a MacBook when my current laptop finally dies, but my last three systems have been PC.

Activation is the responsibility of AT&T. Apple can't give out an AT&T phone number. iTunes is just a portal to AT&Ts servers.

Apparently the major problems are “change of account type from individual to family” and “number portability”.

The activation problems are AT & T problems. For reasons that defy logic, their systems were unable to handle the influx of new customers trying to sign up. It really makes you wonder what they've been doing for the past six months. It was crystal clear that a bunch of these were going to sell. I am a huge Apple fan, have a couple ipods, a Macbook pro, etc, but I'm not crying that I can' get an iPhone yet (no service where I live). iPhone 2.0 is going to be kickass and I'll be in line for that.

Yeah, my boyfriend still has his original Archos mp3 jukebox from 2001, which still works perfectly.

And let's not forget the brilliant option on many of the Archos products which was designed for travelers like myself...the removable external battery, so you can carry a spare (or two). Pure bliss!

I have dealt with the Archos. Sorry.. does not come near the ipod as far as use and sound. But.. glad your such a rebel and I am glad you enjoy your products. So please don't po poo mine to show how different you are. By the way.. all my ipods also still work perfectly and my company two years ago switched everrything to apple and we have never looked back. Best thing we ever did. Ever.

Better sound...perhaps. Use? What do you mean? Archos is FAR more functional and versatile. My 601 Wifi is also a DVR, audio recorder, and extra hard drive, as well as the mp3 player, video player, internet wifi, and photo wallet. And the audio/video player has worked for over 90% of the various formats and codecs I have loaded into it. How do I load it? By just plugging it in, which the computer recognizes as an external hard drive, and dropping whatever files I want into the drive. No iTunes, virtually no conversion necessary (with the exception of a couple of codecs), no restrictions on what I can load or unload to the device or any other computer. Most of the audio files I tried to put on my iPod, it wouldn't recognize and I'd have to convert, then change all the tags, and then I might be able to listen to them, but only if iTunes was working properly and didn't need to be updated or reinstalled.

The only thing an iPhone adds is the phone feature (and only a fractio nof the drive space, but I'm sure that will boosted on the next generation, which will be paid for from the throngs of consumers who "needed" to have the first iPhone EVER), which may be a bonus for those who already use AT&T and have been longing for their iPod to double as a phone for only twice the price (or more). I wonder how many people who bought the iPhone already had contracts with other cell phone companies they will either have to continue or pay a fee to break. Oh yeah, and it looks prettier. And costs about $250 more.

I haven't poo-poo'd anything of yours, Dame. My comments are all based on my own personal experience. I'm not saying this "to show how different I am" or to be "a rebel" and has nothing at all to do with you personally. I see nothing wrong or particularly rebellious or different in educating others on an excellent product that has been overshadowed by a monster mogul. It's no different than a discussion about, say, Julius Meinl vs Starbucks. Or Shipley's vs Dunkin Donuts.

I'm glad you love your Apple products. My disdain for Apple is equally as valid. And as much right as anyone has to rave about iwhatevers, I have the exact same right to voice my own opinion, based on personal experience (I'm not just raging against the corporate machine or any other idealistic nonsense), and rave another brand I have found superior. Unless Apple has purchased the rights to that as well, packaged it in a cute fun color and shape, with a million accessories (sold separately, unless they came with the unit, then not sold at all), and atrociously overpriced.

Believe me, I have problems with Dell and Microsoft as well. When it comes to computers, there is no flawless system out there. I've just had fewer flaws and more versatility at less cost to me with PCs.
