I have dealt with the Archos. Sorry.. does not come near the ipod as far as use and sound. But.. glad your such a rebel and I am glad you enjoy your products. So please don't po poo mine to show how different you are. By the way.. all my ipods also still work perfectly and my company two years ago switched everrything to apple and we have never looked back. Best thing we ever did. Ever.
Better sound...perhaps. Use? What do you mean? Archos is FAR more functional and versatile. My 601 Wifi is also a DVR, audio recorder, and extra hard drive, as well as the mp3 player, video player, internet wifi, and photo wallet. And the audio/video player has worked for over 90% of the various formats and codecs I have loaded into it. How do I load it? By just plugging it in, which the computer recognizes as an external hard drive, and dropping whatever files I want into the drive. No iTunes, virtually no conversion necessary (with the exception of a couple of codecs), no restrictions on what I can load or unload to the device or any other computer. Most of the audio files I tried to put on my iPod, it wouldn't recognize and I'd have to convert, then change all the tags, and then I might be able to listen to them, but only if iTunes was working properly and didn't need to be updated or reinstalled.
The only thing an iPhone adds is the phone feature (and only a fractio nof the drive space, but I'm sure that will boosted on the next generation, which will be paid for from the throngs of consumers who "needed" to have the first iPhone EVER), which may be a bonus for those who already use AT&T and have been longing for their iPod to double as a phone for only twice the price (or more). I wonder how many people who bought the iPhone already had contracts with other cell phone companies they will either have to continue or pay a fee to break. Oh yeah, and it looks prettier. And costs about $250 more.
I haven't poo-poo'd anything of yours, Dame. My comments are all based on my own personal experience. I'm not saying this "to show how different I am" or to be "a rebel" and has nothing at all to do with you personally. I see nothing wrong or particularly rebellious or different in educating others on an excellent product that has been overshadowed by a monster mogul. It's no different than a discussion about, say, Julius Meinl vs Starbucks. Or Shipley's vs Dunkin Donuts.
I'm glad you love your Apple products. My disdain for Apple is equally as valid. And as much right as anyone has to rave about iwhatevers, I have the exact same right to voice my own opinion, based on personal experience (I'm not just raging against the corporate machine or any other idealistic nonsense), and rave another brand I have found superior. Unless Apple has purchased the rights to that as well, packaged it in a cute fun color and shape, with a million accessories (sold separately, unless they came with the unit, then not sold at all), and atrociously overpriced.
Believe me, I have problems with Dell and Microsoft as well. When it comes to computers, there is no flawless system out there. I've just had fewer flaws and more versatility at less cost to me with PCs.
Talk about diarrhea of the mouth.
Dude.. spoken like a true PC guy. Makes me love my Apple stuff even more.
I was in Best Buy the other day and fell in love with the iMac. The one I was drooling over has a 24" flat panel. I don't have the space for one that big, but once I can afford a new computer I'm getting an iMac. I always had PC's growing up, so that's just what I've always gotten. Plus, I'd always heard horror stories about Macs not being compatible with MS anything. But that doesn't seem to be a big issue any more, from what I've read. I have a Dell laptop now that I got as a gift and I'm so over it. It works alright, but Dell's service is so crappy I will never buy Dell anything again.

avab, the iMac is the greatest computer I've ever owned. I am crazy about it!

I'm not sure how a direct and thorough response is a bad thing, but whatever. It must be my rebellious nature to try and be different. How PC of me.

Are you one of the PC Police? Don't tell Mr. Roxy!
Police? As if! Rebels don't need no stinkin' badges.
OOOOHHH....Unless I'm one of those "bad cops". I could do that!
I was not putting you down. Honest.
My techo-geek bf had to get his on Saturday. It took 24 hours for his phone to be fully functional - he switched from T-Mobile - but it now works just fine. And he totally loves it. It'll be at least 2 years now for me, since I'm signing a new contract with Verizon.
You have a bf now? When did this happen?
My technogeek husband was 14th in line when they went on sale Friday evening. Aside from the frustration of waiting for AT&T getting their sh*t together, and the disappointment of not being able to custom pick a phone number, he couldn't be happier with it.
And I quote, "I'm in love. I love this more than any piece of technology I have ever loved before."
It is pretty impressive and VERY easy to use. Personally, I'm happy with my little Sidekick and feel no need to make a change. But for those whose world is rocked by new technology, the iPone seems to be living up to its end of the bargain.
Iff.. how is the touchscreen working for you?
Iflit.. how is the touchscreen working for you?
Bad me, bad me! I have no self control. I couldn't resist. I bought one today, the evil won out.
I had been thinking of it for days, and I finally gave into the dark side.
Of course I am not telling Steve.......he'd kill me. I'll just accidently pull it out one day after it gets here and act surprised and say "Oh, I am sure I told you the day I bought it, Dear."
Sigh
