The announcement is expected this Tuesday. And as of tomorrow AT&T is dropping the price of the iPhone 3GS to $49 with a two year contract in a effort to retain customers.

As soon as Verizon starts offering to carrt iPhone I am upgrading and joining. At&t sucks and even if they gave their service for free I would still switch!

I think the problem with AT&T has a lot more to do with the iPhone than AT&T's network. Ever since I got rid of my iPhone I've had fast service and no dropped calls. I'll be curious to see if the phone runs any better on Verizon's network.

I think so. Everyone in our office had Blackberries until my bosses switched to iPhones. The complaints about dropped calls were constant with the iPhones and nobody seemed to have the same problem with the Blackberries. They love the iPod Touch, but hated the iPhone.

I've had a blackberry for about two and a half years, and cannot think of one instance where I wanted to have the ability to surf the web while talking on the phone. That would not deter me in the least from getting a Verizon iphone (and I honestly can't wait to get one).

I was wondering... why do you have to purchase a data plan? how come you can't just use a wireless network if one's available... it's pretty much a money thing, right??

I've heard many of the tech types saying that those of us who stay on AT&T are going to see a dramatic increase in our data speeds and just a positive move on other performance/network issues as many people just blindly switch to Verizon, and Verizon users are going to start seeing slow-downs, etc. iPhone users on AT&T consistently average higher data consumption than any other smart phone users and Verizon's network will definitely feel that pinch, it's just a matter of how much.

There are also pretty good odds that Verizon will also use this to roll out tiered data packages like AT&T did, thus saying goodbye to unlimited data for new users on the two major networks, and probably meaning the others will soon follow.

I knew refusing to switch to AT&T would pay off. I am still not sold on the iPhone. I might just get a Droid and avoid the hype altogether if they don't offer something newer or cooler with the Verizon iPhone.

You can get it without a data plan, you just have to pay the full price of the phone, which is around $700. The reason the phone's price is about $150 is because At&t subsidizes the price, but they only do that if you're monthly plan is worth it for them. If you don't have a data plan, they won't subsidize the cost of the phone as it would be significantly less than if you do have a data plan.

I've heard the same thing AEA. I have no doubt that the iPhone will be just as crappy on Verizon's network as it has been on AT&T's.

Anybody thinking about getting a Droid on Verizon, take a look at the Samsung Fascinate. Literally, look at it. It's a top of the line Android phone (or will be when it gets upgraded to 2.2) but the screen is stunning. Miles better than anything by Motorola or HTC.

As an AT&T (used to be Cingular) customer, I've been looking at the Captivate as well as the Fascinate, and I do like the interface design of this series. I've never owned a smart phone, don't really like the iPhone for some reason, and am looking at the droids.

I don't quite understand why the iPhone/AT&T thing was so exclusive for so long. Why try to monopolize a phone model? That just leads to resentment and overloading of the network, and having to do the unimaginable--gasp, making the phone more affordable to stay competitive. They wound up having to do that anyway. I guess you get away with making as much moola as you can while you can.

Are there any users here of the Samsung Captivate/Fascinate? Do you like your phone?

This Verizon thing has my head spinning, being a Libra and therefore unable to make a decision.

My att contract is up at the end of the month. I've had my iphone for the run of that contract and, for the most part, love it. The only problem I've had with it is the coverage here in NYC...dropped calls/no bars in my own apartment, where I use it the most. Our laptop card is also att and that coverage stinks as well.
I had decided to dump my iphone for the Droid X because it looked great, was similar and also was a hotspot(now am looking at the samsung thanks to you guys).

I see myself in a few weeks walking around the Verizon store in circles afraid of making the wrong decision.
The overload of Verizon now has me worried, because it makes sense that that would happen.

Forget what I said about the Fascinate - Verizon released the update yesterday but it was NOT the expected upgrade to Android 2.2. Nobody can understand why they did (didn't do) this and a lot of people are very frustrated. It basically cripples what should be a spectacular phone.

And I could use some advice on phones. I am up for a new phone in April and I don't know what to get. I don't need a smartphone or iPhone because I do mostly calling, texting, and very little internet use. I want something with a qwerty key pad and a decent sized screen. I had my eye on the Pantech Jest, but I have been reading horrible reviews about it. But,I also have been reading good ones. So, does anyone know of any good ones? I have Verizon and don't want to switch.

The Droid X is a phenomenal device. I have no regrets. And I was also waiting on the Verizon Iphone. I would still wait for the second generation . First generation Apple products always have kinks. ALWAYS.
