I am Catholic and I am not pissed at JP... Hmmm is there something wrong with me or am I just insane and believe everyone has the right to believe and do whatever they want as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of someone else?

damn you son and the horse you rode in on! how dare you use rational thought in what is a completely emotional argument. now, repent and get one of dollypop's floggers and give yourself 17.62471 lashes lest you make the same mistake again.

I completely agree with JohnPopa. Absolutely. There is just no point. Walk around with some ashes so it makes you feel good about yourself, and give up something trivial like soda or candy. Does it change anything about you? No. Does it make you a better person? Absolutely not. I will never understand the mindset of some people, as I'm sure many who take part in that do not understand how I can be so againt it. But I'm not against the foolish practices as much as I am against the idea of people being brainwashed for something completely rediculous.

re: lent

Munk, for me it's about living healthier. I love how people give up things for Lent but then they go right back to doing those things once Lent is over. It's meant to help you live healthier/be a better person. (Which I happen to think is not ridiculous and everyone could use a bit more of in their life whether religious or not.) Of course, you get the wackos who go around and just do it for the attention. I think everyone could benefit from a little moderation in their lives especially in our society today. (See everyone, it's possible to disagree and not be pissed off.)

re: lent

I completely agree with your logic, I don't think anyone with a working brain would dispute that what you said makes sense. I just don't think of what you said being in terms of religion. I do not believe in God, I do not practice a religion and I am very very much against organized religion, but I believe that you have to be connected to yourself and everyone should have spirituality in their lives, if you know how to use it. I think meditating is more practical and more logical than saying prayers to make up for a "sin" that some random guy in a booth instructed you to do. do you see what I mean?

re: lent

i was struck by the logic in this morning's gospel...

Matthew 6: 1 - 6, 16 - 18

1
"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

2
"Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

3
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4
so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

5
"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

6
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

16
"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

17
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18
that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

re: lent

im not mad at any one.

lent is a time to give something up to feel the sacerfice that Jesus did for us.Choose to do it or not but why come in hear saing its bad to do that.Chris we dont feel your agnerant and i can see where your coming from but to me religen is not a story like sanata it is hisory and when you dont have facts to back you up of corse there will be diffrat apinions.I feel that god dosnt want you to worshup him altho i do think it is the right thing to do i think he wants us to be good cairing people and i think thats more inportant than going to chirch evry sunday.to me this isnt "brain wash"it is the way i CHOOSE to live and the way others CHOOSE not to.

now, strap-on, you're trying to read it literally. it's clearly advising that there's no need to broadcast your devotions, whatever they be, to others and that doing so gains you nothing but the annoyance of others.

Papa, I got that part. I wasn't mocking you at all, just the notion that "the father" will reward you. It wasn't directed at you.

While I respect your opinion Liam, we obviously don't agree.

Someone needs to explain this to me:

Liam said people give things up on Lent as a way of remembering or beginning to feel the sacrifice that Jesus made for "us." I will never understand that notion and can someone please explain to me what exactly Jesus is said to have done for "us." It has never made sense to me.

re: lent

Exactly. And what does Jesus dying on a cross have to do with us today. I'm fairly certain him being killed or whatever was not "because of our sins." It's aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall crap.

re: lent

the significance of the ashes is repentence of sins. the practice goes back to those penitants who bestrew themselves with ashes and wore sackcloth (also known as the dreaded hairshirt). it's done on ash wednesday which is the beginning of lent as a reminder that the faithful should repent of their sins throughout the coming lenten season. now, i know, shouldn't you be repentent for something that you consider a sin (if you believe in such things) throughout the year? of course, but during this time such penance is heightened as this season is the most sacred time of the christian calendar.

as far as giving something up for lent? well lent encompasses the 40 days leading up to easter sunday (the holiest day of the aforementioned holiest season of the christian calendar), revered in christianity for being the day that christ rose from the dead, basically giving the basis for the religion that bears his name. historically, the week leading up to the resurrection was celebrated with a festival that included a friday fast to commemorate the day that christ died. this duration of the fast varied from place to place and eventually ended up at 40 days (40's a big number in christianity, moses spent 40 years in the desert, christ 40 days in the desert) starting on ash wednesday. traditionally it's kinda comparable to the ramadan fast in islam.

the nature of the fast also varied widely eve from it's inception with some folks going on water alone, some just avoiding anything that was considered a living creature, some avoiding fish, others eggs, etc. it's become more and more relaxed through the years to the point now that folks give up something more in the spirit of the fast than an actual fast.

as far as the specifics of christianity and jesus dying for our sins, if you want, you can pm me.

re: lent

CatieElphie1, personally, if you don't like it, fix it. Change religiong. I know this isn't an option for tons of people, but if it is one for you and you don't belive it, I think you should find one that suits you and your beliefs. And the ashes are the brunt palms from palm sunday and they represent that we are nothing without god and we wouldnt be here without, we would be just ashes. "we rise again from ashes, from the good weve failed to do, we rise again from ashes, to create ourselve anew" is a quote from a song we sing that kinda sums it all up. Hope this helps.
