Last year I gave up sodas and I have only had two sodas since that time and I had none during the enitity of Lent. I was proud of myself.

re: lent

I'm giving up junk food. But that's more to serve my own selfish purpose to lose the holiday fat and the freshman 15 than out of any special religious purpose.

Although Sara Lee poundcake is, to me, a religion.

LIAM, please proofread - just a little, please.

I'm afraid I don't 'celebrate Lent'. But I hope it proves to be a spiritual experience for you all!

re: lent

instead of "giving up" something for Lent. How about "giving something" for Lent ?

Mom's right Liam! Many people now do something extra each day instead of give something up. It's a little harder to remember, though.
And remember - abstaining from meat is only a rule for us Catholics, so you really can't tell everyone to skip meat tomorrow. But thanks for thread.

re: lent

Oh god, tomorrow's going to bring forth a bunch of people wandering around with soot on their foreheads while broadcasting their divine sacrifice in giving up soda pop and candy corn for a few weeks, isn't it?

And we laugh at the notion of a magic bunny that gives us eggs.

re: lent

I call myself a "recovering" Catholic. I find lent a far more rewarding season when I have to DO something.

Recovering Catholic myself. Funny that you have to "give up" something for lent... I grew up in Costa Rica, and the only thing I remember we had to do for lent was not eat meat on Friday. And, I mean, CR is very Catholic... it's the religion of the government!

I don't give anything up for 40 days... I try to be a good person as often as I can... not that I'm always successful, mind you, but I try. re: lent

JohnPopa, I love you, and I'm going to get ashes on my head- ha!
I contemplated giving up chocolate. But not if I'm trying to get through another horrible winter at university.
I contemplated giving up sex. But, come on now........that's pushing it!
I contemplated giving up coffee, but for the good of my housemates, friends, profs, random people I walk past on the street, I realized it would do humanity no good.

So I am giving up grilled cheese.
Seriously, it's tragic. Now I'm going to actually have to learn how to cook.

re: lent

I am giving up meat but I have heard it is easier than you'd think so I am also giving up soda. My proactive thing I am doing is training for a marathon, and I have one more thing I am abstaining from that I am not sharing with anyone because I think it will mean more to not make a show of it. The meat and soda will be kind of obvious, but the last one not so much.
My avatar is a reminder to myself. I need lots of reminders...

Thanks Johnpopa for offending me more than anyone ever has on this board. HOW DARE YOU mock anyone else's religion? Thanks also for reminding me to from now on avoid any and all message boards. People like you have balls bigger than your brains when you can hide behind your computer. I'd like to see you say that to someone's face who has ashes on their forehead. I ask that you and whoever else wants to, to please go crazy & attack me with the most negative posts you can come up with. I won't be reading this & trust me, I won't let the door hit me on the way out as I leave this board which is overcrowded with scum like you.
