re: lent

CatieElphie1, personally, if you don't like it, fix it. Change religiong. I know this isn't an option for tons of people, but if it is one for you and you don't belive it, I think you should find one that suits you and your beliefs. And the ashes are the brunt palms from palm sunday and they represent that we are nothing without god and we wouldnt be here without, we would be just ashes. "we rise again from ashes, from the good weve failed to do, we rise again from ashes, to create ourselve anew" is a quote from a song we sing that kinda sums it all up. Hope this helps.

Junkfood.

I don't understand why you would have a negative view of giving up something for Lent; I'm not Catholic and I give up something every year. I'm also not Muslim, but I've fasted for Ramadan before. It's just a way to refocus on what's really important in your life and (sometimes) give you an excuse to have a break from the things that are really bad for you. I've actually given up meat and soda in past years and never started eating them again.

munkustrap178, I find it interesting that you're insulting the whole concept of Christianity. Would you tell a Buddhist or a Hindu was completely wrong in their beliefs and are ridiculous?

re: lent

I'm not insulting the whole concept of Christianity. I'm insulting the concept that getting ashes smeared on your head and giving up trivial things in your life is pointless. The "stories" and "reasons" why people do that are fabricated tales. It only takes common sense to realize that if you pray every day and do everything a good Catholic is supposed to, you are not a better person, you do not have a better life, and you are not more fortunate in life than those that don't. And that proves that it's crap. If believing certain things makes you feel more whole and good inside, then I'm all for that - completely - and that's what it should be fore. But I do despise the Catholic church and for what it stands for. It's supposed to be about kindess, acceptance, and love. If all of those things can describe the Catholic religion, why are they against people of the same sex marrying if they love each other? Why are they against women's rights? Why are most so naive and full of hate? That's all I'm saying. I can't imagine how anyone with a conscious could be part of a religion that blatantly puts down other people, when it's supposed to be all about love. And don't even get me started on confession...

Skittles: All the power to you if you observe random religious holidays. It doesn't make sense to me, because if you don't know what they're for and don't believe in the ideals of the religion it's meaningless, but if it makes you feel "good," then atleast it's working for you. Just like giving up soda. That has nothing to do with religion. If it makes you feel like you have a will power and some control in your life, then I guess it works but that's also why people are bulemic. And you gave up meat why? Because of a religious tradition you don't believe in, but partook in anyway? I gave up meat long ago because of moral issues - surely nothing to do with "Jesus."

And no, I wouldn't tell a Buddhist, or people of any other religion that their beliefs are ridiculous. Every other religion makes sense and everything is for a reason. I do not practice religion - I think organized religion is a terrible thing - but I identify more with the principles of Buddhism than any other religious sect. I don't believe in certain aspects, but so much of it is science and fact, rather than just based on a foolish book of fabricated literature, like THE BIBLE. It is foolish that people live their life based on a book that was written by men about other men. Most of it just fabricated "tales" filled with morals, yes, but religion also so easily brings out the evil in people. And in the end, I just think that Catholics and Christians are just big walking contraditions. Most of them, anyway. It's pathetic and sad.

Some quotes to make you think:

"The trait of flexibility, which is so essential to effective emotional functioning, is frequently blocked and sabotaged by profound religiousity. For the person who dogmatically believes in god, and who sustains this belief with a strong faith unfounded on fact - wich a pious religionist of course does - clearly is not open to many aspects of change and, instead, sees things narrowly and bigotedly."

"Man will never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

"To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin"

"It's an incredible con job when you think about it, to believe something now in exchange for something after death. Even corporations with their reward systems don't try to make it posthumous."

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and even people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

"They strongly believe in rigid and unvalidatable assumptions precisely because they are often afraid to follow their own preferences and aims. They demand a guarantee that they will be safe and secure, come what may; and since the real world does not provide them with any such guarantee, they invent some God or other higher power that will presumably give it to them."

"Religion is based mainly upon fear - fear of the mysterious, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race."

"The conclusion seems inescapable that religiosity is, on almost every conceivable count, opposed to the normal goals of mental health."

"The Bible is not the verbally inspired, inerrant word of God; it is just a collection of contraditory, discrepant books that were written by superstitious ethnocentrics who thought that the hand of God was directing the destiny of the Hebrew people..."

Sorry for the evil RANT, but I think a lot of those quotes are perfect.

re: lent

I really like those things. As stated earlier, Lent is about sacrafice. Jesus was nailed to a piece of wood for me, the least I can do is not eat cookies, fries, chips and candy for 40 days. Just my view though.

Honey. Jesus did not die FOR YOU. He died years ago before you were even a thought. Before your parents were a thought, etc. It had nothing to do with YOU.

re: lent

munkustrap178, I don't observe "random religious holidays" with no concept of belief in the religion. I'm Christian, not Catholic, so I don't believe that observing Lent is required, but it is an appropriate sacrifice if you believe that Jesus died for you sins.

If YOU PERSONALLY don't believe this, then that's fine, but don't criticize me (and others) for my beliefs, because I never criticized yours.

I never said I gave up meat because of religion, I said that I gave it up during the observance of Lent. I had been considering it for months and gave it up during Lent just as a timing coincidence.

Fasting for Ramadan was out of respect for my two best friends, because I was always with them during the day and I felt that it was rude to be eating in front of them when they couldn't even take a sip of water until sundown. I may not be Muslim, but I do understand the religious ideology behind it's observance.

"If it makes you feel like you have a will power and some control in your life, then I guess it works but that's also why people are bulemic."

I said nothing about will power and control. I said that it can make you realize what is important in your life. By taking away the grande soy latte you have every morning, you can realize that it is not what makes your life worth living.

I could make a list of a bunch of quotes about how wrong I think you are as well, but I figure that a quote from the dictionary is most appropriate:

Prej-u-dice: An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.

re: lent

First of all, I'm a guy. "He." I wasn't putting any of you down at all, and I don't disrespect ANY of you. I was voicing my opinion about the religion. I also said several things about how I do respect people for what they believe, although I don't believe it myself. However, in your rebuttal you didn't mention one nice thing I said. However sparse, I did say some things that weren't derogatory. I never meant anything in a derogatory manner towards any individual because they believe something. If you think I did and wish to turn it around and bash my beliefs, go ahead - things like that don't offend me. However, I guarantee you that I would win that argument.

Orangeskittles: I know what prejudice means. It doesn't apply to me - prejudice means you make a judgement with no prior knowledge. I do know the principles of the Catholic religion - my parents practice and I was raised that way. I attened religious school - I was confirmed, baptised, and made my confirmation. I'm not making any judgement about people - I made a judgement on the religion WITH knowledge nand knowing what I was talking about, so try to find a more fitting definition from the dictionary, if you wish. I made that list of quotes not to show that you were wrong - no one is WRONG for believing what they believe - I made a list of quotes that back up what I thought. It had nothing to do with YOU. I said many times that I give you credit for doing what you did, and that if you find peace from it then that's all that matters. But you didn't bother to copy and paste THAT.

FindingLilmslilo: First of all, learn how to construct a sentence. Second, I'm a guy. Third, I never said God wasn't real, you did.

re: lent

I'm sorry that you don't like the religion. It is your opinion and you're entitled to believe what you want. I have no intention to put down you or your beliefs, nor do I want to fight about it. As innocent as your motives were, your posts could very easily offend Christians, and especially Catholics. I don't know why you think religion makes people be evil. I don't think you see the amount of good Christian's do in the world. Of course there are those who use it for wrong reasons, but if you look at every religion you will find it. Any radicalist can use religion to justify evil that they are doing. Jews persecuting Christian's, Christian's persecuting Jews, Islamic radicals commiting terrorist attacks. There are those who do evil but the large of these followers are giving back to the world. I also don't understand why you say these stories and reasons are fabricated tales. Many Christian's around the world believe them to be true. Just like Muslim's believe the writings of Mohammed to be true. Just because you don't believe they are true doesn't mean that they are fabricated. The ashes from ash wednesday are a creation of the church as a visible manifestation of repentence during the Lenten season. I can see why you would say they are contradictory because the reading at that service involses repenting in private where only your "father who sees in secret will reward you". Everyone has their own beliefs, and their beliefs are based on faith. To beleive what you believe requires faith just as much as it does for me to believe what I believe, and for the other Christians and Catholics to believe what they believe. Same with Muslims, Buddists, etc. We can never know what is really true so we have faith that what it is we believe is what is true.

re: lent

Everything you said is 100% true, and I agree with. I never meant to put any people down. And those Christians and Catholics I did seem to put down by calling most of them "walking contradictions," among other things, I wasn't referring to every member of the Catholic religion. To be honest, my main dislike of the Catholic religion comes not from what is taught in the church or from why the religion was created, but what it has turned into. Instead of it being about spreading love and faith and joy, more often than not is has turned into a giant school for bigotry and hatred. Trying to de-humanize Gays as well as trying to take away women's rights. It's not the fundamental religious beliefs that I oppose - I disagree with them, but I oppose their views on how they treat people, and mainly, abortion. So again, I'm sorry if I sounded like I was attacking people personally, because that was my farthest intention.

re: lent

I strongly agree with what you say about what the church has turned into. I have a few gay friends and some of the stuff I was taught in Catholic high school about homosexuality made me sick. I also agree with your opinion on abortion. It is hard to see how a religion can impose a rule on someone when they don't even know the circumstances. I consider myself to be a pretty liberal Catholic becuase I could never see myself conforming with some of the teachings the church puts out.

re: lent

I've been realizing that many people are like that. However, my question is that if you oppose so many main aspects of the church, how can you still call yourself a Catholic? I can't even be around a church without feeling sick.

re: lent

It's not that I oppose the main aspects. I still believe in the fundamental teachings of the church. There are some things that I just can't agree with because I don't know how they can pass some of that off as God's will. I mean if homosexuals and woman are so bad, than God wouldn't have made them, assuming that he is real. I still practice most aspects of the religion, and believe the teachings of Jesus. So I still consider myself Catholic. I just do go gallavanting around saying that gays and woman, or people of other religions are inferior, because in my mind they aren't and I have the utmost respect for them.

re: lent

A friar I met recently told me that his favorite part about the Catholic Church is that it is so slow to change. Yes, teachings have been wrong, but over time the Church eventually gets things right. He said he thinks it has kept the Church from going off in all sorts of crazy directions it would not have lasted as long as it has if it wasn't so slow to change. So there's hope on at least some issues, even though it is extremely frustrating right now. I always tell people the greatest commandment is to love. It also says somewhere in there not to judge lest ye be judged and those are two of my biggest philosophies in life. I think a lot of people really need to reexamine whether they really follow what God says. I don't try to shove my beliefs down people's throats, but at the same time I don't expect others to shove theirs down my throat. There is a lot of misunderstanding of tone in this thread I think. I know of many 'walking contradictions' in many faiths including Catholicism.

For Lent last year I gave up worrying, boys, and the elevator.

This year I'm giving up excuses, reality tv, and television "list" shows (like I Love the Whatevers, E's Most Embarrassing Celeb Moments, etc.)
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

"For Lent last year I gave up worrying, boys, and the elevator."

I don't celebrate lent for I am a different religion entirely or rather atheist is more like it but....

To give up worrying? OMG! Flowery- how did you do that? For me to give up worrying would be like... a different me, nobody would know who I am. Worrying/anxiety rules my life. It's me, a part of me. I don't like worrying all the time, per se, but, I jsut can't see myself without worrying. It's been me for my whole life and to change would just not be mentally or physically possible. I think worrying is a part of me. Worrying to me is like an attatchemnt, kinda like someone who was born with an extra finger. But, seriously, did you really give worrying up? How did you do it and how's it going now?

And giving up the elevator. haha- thats a long story for me. I gave up the elevator 4 weeks ago when I got stuck in it in the library...Whoa- that was scary! I was like screaming and grabbing onto people that I didn't know. And plus, I used to be in NCSY (a very religious Jewish group), and to make a long story short, NCSY goes to different cities and has conventions for Shabbat. We once stayed at a hotel and had rooms booked for the first floor but I don't think it was booked correctly so we ended up on the 12th floor. And being very very religious, you can't use any electricity or doing any work on Shabbat so all of Shabbat we had to walk 12 flights up and 12 flights down....oy- now was that an experince! I just thank G-d (if there is one re: lent) that I am not religious at all. You should only imagaine what some of the Jews believe in. I mean, it's not wrong, but it sure ain't my ways of living.

People like you are the reason I'm on medication.
