It sounds boring. He could at least have upped the entertainment value and used a gun or something.
Black humor aside, this has very little to do with the internet. He had issues and was a suicide risk to begin with.

Ummm...wow. That's like 15 minutes from where I live.
What's goin on around here the last 2 weeks? 2 weeks ago, a high school student shot her "friend" and killed her...during school.
Then another high school student brought a gun to school which he claims he bought on the street for 100$.
And a third grader brought a loaded gun to school.
Crazy.
And they think metal detectors will help. Well, what they fail to see is that metal detectors will only go so far. If someone really wants to do something, metal detectors or not, they'll do it!
How about we get to the root of the problem. Find out what is making kids so angry that they feel the need to harm themselves or others. And then teach them that VIOLENCE IS NOT THE ANSWER. *And yes, I realize that it's not always the kids fault...sometimes it's the parents (or lack of).
Sorry, a bit of a threadjack.

You can't look around and see what makes people angry in this country nowadays?
You must live in a pretty cushy place...or out on a farm.

Ummm...neither. I know what makes some people angry in this country. But I'm not talking about anger. I'm talking about those who take joy in beating and taunting others. People who are entertained by misery and suicide. I'm talking about pre-teen girls gleefully ganging up on a girl and beating her unconscious for fun and posting it on the YouTube to impress their friends and encourage others to do so.
ETA: Sorry, I thought you were talking to me.

You mean Boxing, UFC, & wrestling?? Taking joy from pain isn't anything new.

Posted: 11/21/08 at 4:44pmWrestling is scripted drama/comedy, and boxing and UFC involves two willing participants. Not a comparison at all to the glee some take in the utter humiliation and destruction of weak outcasts.

If I may voice an opinion as someone who was raised in a time that wasn't so violent.
The kids of today have basically been entertained since they were very young, that's all that life has been about. The problem with constant entertainment and no real work or challenge is there is no fruit from your labor which I think people need.
If we consider that we were designed to be survivalists on this planet, then wouldn't we have these natural tendencies to get a sense of well being from the struggles of just keeping a roof over our heads and keeping food on the table.
Of course our society doesn't need us to do that anymore but still, it really needs to ask more of it's children to at least contribute to the well being of the family unit. I don't know, do kids still have chores or is that now child abuse?
I think all this violence has a lot to do with boredom and a lack of purpose.
That's a small part of the problem as I see it. I'm sure there are lot's of other reasons.

Posted: 11/21/08 at 8:00pmOhio, you're probably thinking of Untraceable starring Ashley Judd, but Dario Argento did it better in the 90s in The Card Player.

SVU also did it better a couple years ago.

What a waste! Why would someone encourage someone else to off themself. All kidding aside, what have we come to?

It is the impersonal feeling one has on the internet, also. We can see it even in these boards at times (imagine that!). The annominity of being on line can bring out the inner bully in people. People say things to people on line that they probably never would face to face.
I am sure that the people responding to this kid's threats of suicide looked at it as nothing more then another live time video game.
