You have a very lovely tone to your voice. Just work on your diction. You need crisper consonants, and some of your vowels are a little funny.

Also, don't sit on your low notes at the very beginning; keep them in the phrase.

Very good job.

Look out my window
What do you see?
A crack in the sky
And a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay...

OH!

It was very pretty. But, for college auditions you might what no anally focus on those things Blair mentioned.

I have NEVER met Cheyenne Jackson. I have never hung out with him in his dressing room, he did not tweet me, he never bought me a beverage, and he mostly certainly didn't tickle me. . .that is all.

it sounds really good!
the only thing i can say is that some of your vowels sound a bit swallowed. try to focus your vowels to the back of your front teeth. It really helps me! I think overall they're good pieces for college auditions.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help, guys. I have decided not to do either of those (unless requested). I'm thinking of selections more along the lines of "If I Can't Love Her" from BatB and "Where is the Life That Late I Led" from KM,K.

I would really appreciate more comments. They would help me no matter what I choose to sing. Don't hold back if you think I stink.

BEWARE of using If I Can't Love Her for college auditions. Numerous universities, such as Cincinnati, publicize the fact that they do NOT want to hear songs from certain musicals INCLUDING beauty and the beast. they are generally "overdone." though i wouldn't necessarily say that if i can't love her is overdone, the auditors probably hear it more times than they would like to throughout the course of auditions.

generally it is recommended not to sing a song from a show currently on broadway whether or not it is overdone.

you have a nice voice. focusing on breath support will help you greatly. i really really like your tone quality and it has INCREDIBLE potential. however, you sound (on some enchanted evening) as if you are trying to put on a voice that is not your own.

relax your larynx by keeping the tongue and the base of the tongue relaxed. make sure your tongue is relaxed in your mouth and that the front tip of your tongue is touching against the back of your front bottom teeth. however, be certain that your tongue is relaxed which will remove tension in the larynx and help keep the larynx in a low, fixed position.

your diction and vowels are a bit fuzzy, so practice the lyrics as spoken word SEVERAL times, then sing the song. then repeat and repeat. that is as best of a diction exercise as i know.

good luck in the fall. i will be auditioning for schools as well. maybe i will see you there!

Thanks, Ken! Yeah, when I recorded Some Enchanted Evening, it was pretty much right after hearing Stokes do it, so I was probably (unintentionally)trying to sound like him. One reason I am considering IICLH is that it is poppy/belty, and I want to show both sides of my voice. I do pull it off really well, but maybe you're right about it being overdone. I will look for other material. If any of you have any suggestions, now that you've heard me, it would be wonderful.

THose songs that you mentioned are not really appropriate for college auditions. They want younger material. Think "lonely town" from on the town or "the shortest day of the year" from the boys from syracuse or "all i need is the girl". they don't want to see you playing an older character they generally want to hear you sing a song from a character you could play. DEFINITELY do not do If I can't love her. That song is perfect on my voice too but I didn't touch it for college auditions.

To what that person said about swallowing your notes: Try to get the tone a little bit more far forward. By NO means does that mean be nasal, but try warming up with lip trills and go into your nose a bit during warm up and that should get your resonance a bit more forward. also don't focus on "sounding classical" just lower that larynx, raise that soft palate and go for it. if you're getting tired it's too forced.

you've got a good voice man.

FYI you noted that we sound similar - my college audition songs were "I Dont Remember You" from "The Happy Time" (Kander and Ebb) and "Streets of Dublin" from "A Man Of No IMportance" (Ahrens and Flaherty"

enough of the bumping....everyone that has something nice to say has said it. now go get a voice teacher and some new songs. or i think you should audition for colleges with "hello young lovers" just what they want to hear

good, but it sounds like you're trying to hard, I find it that people sing at their best when relaxed and get this (Surprise) not trying! Keep practicing and I'll look for you on broadway! VEry sexy voice

Rockyhorror89, the whole point of my making this thread was to hear NOT nice things. Everybody tells me I'm wonderful, but I'm sure there are people that don't think so, and I want to know. I never even considered auditioning with "Hello Young Lovers", it's not even close to being an appropriate song. I have a voice teacher and know plenty of songs, I just wanted some outside opinions.

Thanks, EmieMarie. YOUR comment was quite helpful.

when you say "I decided not to do either of those" it gave the impression that it was in consideration. in addition, what about this makes this "your rendition?".....make the song your own to make it interesting. people want to hear your voice and your choices you make with songs. that comment came off way more rude than i meant just fyi. fowardness. that is the key. what schools are you auditioning for?

I apologize for my rude backlash.

Anyway, I only called it my rendition because it grammatically made more sense than any other title I could think of.

I am considering auditioning for NYU, CMU, Boston Conservatory, and a few other music- heavy schools, some for Classical Voice and some for Musical Theater. I have a high enough GPA and SAT to get into pretty much any school that is not academically ultra-competitive.

And BTW, I was being unoriginal on purpose. For the purpose of the site, I tried to sound as "Golden Age" as possible.
