Then I humbly retract my statement.
I love Maniac. And although the pic of him holiding the hunting knife is gross, tell me that package isn't HUGE.

Posted: 10/25/07 at 11:01am'Office Killer' with Carol Kane is one ****ed up movie, it's a weird comedic horror film. The director is a photographer (Cindy Sherman, I watched it in my photo class) so it's interesting to wath the camera work and images she sets up.

Posted: 10/25/07 at 11:03amThere is an uproarious extra on the DVD. A "local news story" from 1980 where this secretary has to sit by a window where there is a MANIAC billboard right outside. She goes on and on about how disgusting it is to watch it every day. Then they cut to a shot of her with white paint, rolling over the offending crotch.

Posted: 10/25/07 at 11:12amSee, I have a hard time trusting my younger self's taste. Like, I used to think "The Gate" was scary, but I'd probably be disappointed if I tried to watch it now. Maybe I just liked Stephen Dorff.

OH, what about the one where the guy who played flounder in Animal House is a mongoloid whose mother keeps him locked up in the basement. And pf course he gets out and kills all the teens.
edit: It's called The Unseen. The actor is Stephen Furst.

Try...
Black Christmas '74 (the original slasher, and one of the best)
The Thing (remake)
The Fly (remake)
May (about as off-beat as they come)
Session 9 (possibly the scariest movie I've ever seen)

Another old-school 80's slasher I love is April Fool's Day.

I remember a really cheesy and funny horror movie (from the 70s, I think) about an aphrodisiac leech that invaded a singles apartment complex. The leech would make its host uncontrollably horny as a way to spread itself. The host would seduce an uninfected victim and we'd get to see the leech move from one mouth to another as they kissed. It wasn't porn; it was a drive-in movie. So no smart remarks! I'm pure!
I'll edit with the name after I find it.

Posted: 10/25/07 at 12:34pmArtscallion, the movie you are thinking of is SHIVERS, which in this country was called THEY CAME FROM WITHIN. It was one of David Cronenberg's first movies.

That's it! gross, scary and a little hot all at the same time.
My second favorite, Trilogy of Terror, gave me nightmares for weeks. I don't know if it was that little doll running around or Karen Black's acting.

Synopsis Courtesy of Netflix
Basket Case:
Likeable Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) checks into a Times Square flophouse toting a locked wicker basket. Turns out that inside is what remains of Duane's once-conjoined twin, Belial, who was surgically separated from Duane and left for dead on a trash heap. Now the siblings seek murderous vengeance on the doctors responsible, and Belial won't let anything stop him -- least of all Duane's nascent romance with a coy receptionist.
Lifeforce:
Think: Night of the Living Dead meets Dracula. When a mysterious spaceship hidden within the gaseous stream of Halley's Comet's tail lands on Earth, vampirelike creatures who've been slumbering within the ship (led by Mathilda May, a nude space vampire who can suck the life force from any human) zombify London's populace.
Scanners:
In director David Cronenberg's sci-fi horror film, "scanners" and their unparalleled psychic powers are shunned by the "normals." When Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside) forms an army of scanners to take over the world, only his brother Cameron (Stephen Lack), a scanner who wants to distance himself from his abilities, is capable of stopping him. But inexperienced Cameron's battle with the insanely violent Revok could mean a grisly death -- or worse.
Woodchip Massacre:
Three suburban youngsters are stuck at home in the care of their horrid, imperious Aunt Tess (Patricia McBride) while their father is out of town on business. Next thing you know, the youngest boy unintentionally kills Tess with a huge knife, and the siblings must find a way to dispose of her corpse. But before the trio can finish the job, their unhinged fugitive cousin shows up and puts a crimp in their plans in this 1988 cult classic.
The Stuff:
Schlock-meister Larry Cohen's campy classic finds Americans gorging on the latest snack sensation: a scrumptious, no-calorie treat dubbed "the Stuff." When it threatens to put ice cream makers out of business, industry tycoons draft a corporate spy (Michael Moriarty) to uncover the dessert's "all-consuming" secret formula. Playing former cookie magnate "Chocolate Chip" Charlie Hobbs, Garrett Morris lampoons Famous Amos.
