As the adoptive father of two pure-bred Shelties, I must admit that they are left a bit wanting in the intelligence department. All that in-breeding leaves them like the royal family - basically sharp as a marble.

All this talk about pups made me switch my icon to mine. Thats Riley when he was a puppy. I don't know how to post pictures in the thread so this will have to do!

Don't worry Dgrant about the intelligence. Mine have beauty but no brains. This morning it took my 30 minutes to make my bed because he thought it was a game and kept jumping on it. *Sigh* Try getting a 100 lb dog off your bed. Not fun!

You'll love him though.

yay! I miss my fuzzy friends. re: purebred or mutt
But of course most of the NYC shelters euthanize after five days... I'm not dealing with that.

Speaking of which... y'all might know this. I volunteered at a animal shelter back home for more than five years; I go to college in the city, and I miss it a lot. I want to do that here, but I heard that all of the shelters in the city only give the animals five days before they're put down. Does anyone know of any that are no kill?

I have a purebred Golden Retriever named Abby and she is just adorable. Sure she isn't the most intelligent dog, but not stuck up or anything. She's lazy and easily pleased (fits my lifestyle perfectly hehe) She's four years old and still acts like a puppy. I guess it just depends on the dog, not who its parents are.
TGIF- Awww he's absolutely adorable! Maybe I will go find a picture of Abby...

Any animal is worth rescuing, pure bred or mutt. I have two adopted cats, one a gray tiger mix and the other a black mutt who looks like he has some Siamese in him. They are both the most loving, gentle cats you'd ever want to meet. I swear they know I saved them - they seem truly grateful. They look me right in the eyes all the time as if they want to tell me so.

It's nice to see so many animal lovers on the board. Why am I not surprised?

I sort of rescued one of my yorkies. She was a brood bitch and at age 3 1/2 I took her from the breeder (who had become ill). Once the breeder became a bit better, she wanted me to bring Shiloh back so she could breed her again. Shiloh had a beautiful litter of five puppies (four survived) and they were all sold. The following year, the breeder wanted to breed her again. I was very upset and I lied, saying she never went into heat again. I wanted my Shiloh to have "a lap of her own." She couldn't be more loved.

I love both. When we decided to adopt a dog, we went to the shelter first. However, our allergies were SO horrible from just walking in there that we realized we were not able to adopt a shedding dog (we knew this before, but wanted to try going there). So, we have our purebred Simba who doesn't shed at all and is known as a hypo-allergenic dog (although there really isn't such a thing, he is as close as there is to one). We are lucky- he's extremely intelligent.

Mutts all the way. We used to have a collie/border collie mix and he was such a wonderful dog. He looked like a black-and-white collie. Smart, friendly, protective...I miss him.
Our current dog is mostly Lab, but we don't really know what he's mixed with. He looks like a full Lab except his ears are too small. It's like he has terrier ears on a Lab head. He looks quite silly.
