OCU Vs. SDM

I've narrowed my summer programs down to Stagedoor Manor and OCU (if I get in). Can anyone tell me which I should go to from personal experience? I'm having a really hard time choosing. I like the college aspect of OCU but I mean...it's in Oklahoma and kinda far away. Any opinions?

re: OCU Vs. SDM

I don't think there's really a choice. If you're serious about musical theatre then it's OCU. It's one of the leading musical theater schools and my friend went last year and was amazed by the program. STM is a camp. if you want to go swimming and ride of horse then go there. All you do at SGM is a show. And as you've read from another thread here, those STM prove to be a clique bunch.

If you want to major in MT, go to OCU (if you can get in). remember, STM accepts ANYONE. At OCU you have to send in an audition tape. Why spend the summer with people who aren't serious about music?

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Do you want to do musical theatre in college?

No question: OCU

SDM is a camp. OCU isnt a camp. Which is going to prepare you more for college?

jd says: I like the college aspect of OCU but I mean...it's in Oklahoma

Are you kidding me man? Oklahoma City is a REAL metropolitan city.

You want to go to Lake Sheldrake..some far away, dirt road bumpkin town? And you wonder about Oklahoma City???!!

geesh. Yeah. Sign me up for some mosquito filled land dump!

re: OCU Vs. SDM

There is no question....GO TO OCU.

OCU is a serious program for those who really want to do musical theatre. They train you by not just doing a show but by teaching music theory, piano, acting and such. At Stagedoor, you do a musical and some assorted classes. Not to knock them but OCU is a real university that teaches Tony winners.

Also, it's gonna look much more impressive on your resume that you went and did a prgoram at OCU. It's a university that people in education and the theater business know and respect.

SO deffinately check out OCU!

re: OCU Vs. SDM

There's no love for Stagedoor, is there. I'm only 12 (hehe) And I go to Stagedoor Manor and it is absolutely the best thing that has ever happened to me. They have a pool, but the day anyone does anything sports related besides cast volleyball at SDM is the day hell freezes over. The shows there are very well rehearsed and really impressive-my director had been on broadway nine times (Catherine Cox). And...the person who talked about horse back riding. Yeah right. The classes there are SO good and you make so many great friends and learn so much! I swear on my life-I can sing so much higher and clearer now. And Stagedoor is VERY serious when it comes to rehearsals (which add up to about 80 something hours within 3 weeks). So even though all these people are saying go to OCU-they probably haven't gone to either places.

But again
It's completely up to you
Either way, you'll love your summer

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Honey, I have been to SDM. That's why I said above that I don't want to knock them but it was not the place for me. Too many cliques with small minded theater people who think they are god's gift to acting. And the "classes" they offered were no way educational or very helpful. And there are so many people. OCU is limited to 40. That's it. All the teachers know who you are.

As i said, the big difference is that OCU is a real music university where they train award winning actors. It's much more serious than SDM. The only real serious thing at STM is the show...it's all about the final "show". Well...there's more to life than a show. And if you don't have the proper training to do "the show", nobody is ever going to hire you for real.

I'm glad you liked SDM. My opinion is that it can't top OCU and what they do.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Don't worry DoReMi...theaterholic has just joined (two days ago) and all their posts have been about SDM.

I think the administration got wind that their program isn't as good as OCUs.

Theaterholic and Stagedoor administration....take a look here at a real summer music program:

re: OCU Vs. SDM

I said he'd have fun at either place.
And my posts have NOT only been about Stagedoor.
They've been about Tada, Gary Beach, shows that I'm unfortunately not allowed to see, etc.

I don't get why you've randomly gone anti-me. But all I was saying was I had a great time at Stagedoor and I was sure he would, too. I wasn't saying it was BETTER than OCU. Just that I partiularly liked it there.

So if you want to explain why you have something against 12 year old girls on BWW then go ahead and maybe I'll be able to understand.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

I love these Stagedoor freaks. Look at the other "convenient" Stagedoor thread.

Notice how all the SDM people HAVE to list their credits? Where have any OCU people mentioned their credits?

I'm suprised there is any room at SDM with all those over sized egos.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Hey now. I have been to neither place and know absolutely nothing about either. But saying that all SDM people have huge egos is rather ridiculous. It's just not good to lump people all together like that.

yeah chitty, I appreciate your advice, but you're going too far. theatreholic didn't do anything wrong, she was simply doing what i asked, giving information on one of the two camps.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Having a little sis who went to SDM for a few years, I would say that there are some little SDM egoes out there. But that's not everyone.

The OCU program is totally different than SDM. OCU is a serious place where the training is much more important that doing a show.

I did find it odd that the SDM people did have to list their credits.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

I do NOT have an ego, but I am proud to say what I have done at Stagedoor. I believe its an amazing place, and I also believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions. It is a logical fallacy to state that everyone from stagedoor is egotistical, for that is not the truth at all. Are you going to tell me Broadway actors are egotists, because in Bio sections they list their credits and awards? Please. Do your research. I am sure OCU is a great place, but I am a Stagedoor Manor Alum and its my second home. Just watch our shows and you'll understand the strength of the program.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Honey, there's a BIG difference between a professional performer placing their credits in a playbill and some teen wanna be who has to immediately let everyone know what they did. Now that I look at the SDM thread...yeah...they first things these people do is list their credits.

Tells ya a lot.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

We listed our credits so that other Stagedoor people would know whether they saw us in a show or not.

And I'm not a teen wannabe.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Ha! It's okay. It's funny to see that some people have no lives but to start internet drama. Stagedoor kids are clearly not like that. What environment do you want to be in?

Go to OCU if you get in.
If you don't, there is absolutely nothing wrong with SDM. You'll have a great time either way.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

OCU is INCREDIBLE !! As playitcool and trip[lethreat said...GO TO OCU!

The program is freekin' amazing. It is for serious musical theater performers so don't expect to go horseback riding. And they're doing Les Miz and Pajama Game this summer (I love PG..saw it with Kelli E>).

re: OCU Vs. SDM

HAHA! I love how all the OCU people are claiming the Stagedoor people are elitist and have massive egos... Look at their posts in this thread!

I agree in that whichever you do you'll have fun and get good training and I'll admit I'm biased towards Stagedoor but the bashing that we're getting on here is pretty harsh.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

totally agree.

re: OCU Vs. SDM

Funny. The OCU posters have been very cordial and reserved in their posts while the Stagedoor kids go flying off the handle.

And who are the drama queens?

My advice...go to OCU. One of the best programs in the nation. Get real training.
Ignorance is temporary. Stupidity last forever. Watch out BWW... HE'S BACK.
