I stopped liking them around the time they started charging people to visit their website. Fans buying their CDs and other merchandise wasn't enough; they had to make their underage fans find credit cards and buy membership just to learn the most basic info about their upcoming plans. Even at the age of 14, that didn't sit right with me.
hmm... I know there's a membership thing and all that, but as far as I know you def don't need it to access basic info! I could be totally wrong, but I just know that I've never been a member of any of that and I've always been able to find out info from their site :) I think that the membership is just for special exlusive stuff and all that- and maybe to get discounts on things. At least that's how it is now. You def don't have to pay just to find out tour dates and release dates and things like that.
and awww Tchi4Lif188 dont try and forget!
they're legitimately awesome!
The thing is, even I admit that Middle of Nowhere was NOT their best work. Nor was mmmbop at ALL their best song. In fact, it's nearly impossible for me to name my number 1 favorite song of theirs because there are like.. 6 or 8 that I adore equally. And NONE of those are mmmbop. That's why I get so frustrated when people start judging them when all they've ever known them for is mmmbop. I always wish I had a cd player on me so that I could pop in This Time Around or Underneath and watch as they go "..wow, this is awesome music! who is it?" and then I can smugly go "it just so happens to be the very band you were making fun of a minute ago" :P
(don't get me wrong, I LOVE mmmbop and it makes me entirely too happy, it's just I hate it on the idea that it caused a lot of people to think Hanson was something they were not- a bubblegum wannabe boy band who sounded like girls)

I think it was hanson.net that required a credit card. I remember my friend asking her dad to buy it for her - it was the one that gave you access to that special newsletter that came out like 4 times a year or something, right? Wasn't there also something called green jello? I don't remember exactly what it was.
After the Middle of Nowhere madness settled down, their fans seemed to become more emo/grunge and dark. I don't know exactly what accounted for that change, but it was quite odd

haha, see I never really did the whole fanclub thing so I really don't remember too much about it. I know that before Hanson.net there was MOE, which you signed up for and you got a bunch of exlusive stuff like newsletters and all that. All I really know about Hanson.net is that as of now it is just a plain old website, but you can also sign up if you want exlusive things- so it's basically the same thing as signing up for a fanclub. It's totally possible that when Hanson.net first started you HAD to sign up- I think that was the period of time in between Middle of Nowhere and This Time Around when I really didn't check up on their site too much. But if it was like that before, it's changed now :)

hehehe, oh man the memories!
watching videos from back then makes me want to break out my Tulsa, Tokeyo, and the Middle of Nowhere video! It's the greatest thing ever if not just for Zac and his incredible wackyness! Seriously though, it's WAY too much fun.

I LOVED Hanson back in the day. Then I forgot about them...and a few years ago decided to pick up "Underneath" when I stumbled upon the fact that they had released a new album (I know now that they released another album between the two, but that was still during my "forgot about them" phase). Anyway, I dug Underneath a lot.
I always sort of get a kick out of long-time Hanson fans who immediately go on the defense when talking about Hanson or trying to introduce the "new" Hanson to people who had never been fans. "No! I swear, they're, like, GOOD now! Trust me! They're so over their Mmmbop phase! They're so much more indie sounding!"
I fully own the fact that I was a hardcore superfan of Middle of Nowhere, and listening to it now, some ten years later, I'm still a fan of it. They sounded like girls? Well yeah, they were barely pubescent (and in Zac's case, pre-pubescent). Their lyrics were cheesy and childish? Well yeah, again, they were barely pubescent (and subsequently I thought there were some great tracks -- lyrics-wise -- on Middle of Nowhere). But you have to admit, the songs were catchy as hell. When I was younger, that was pretty much all I needed to be sold, and even today, the melodies on that album don't cease to impress me.

haha, as you could probably tell, that's me
It's really not that I'm ashamed of having loved them back then, or having loved Middle of Nowhere. At all. I have absolutely no problem admitting I did. It's just people who DIDN'T like them back then are so quick to call you a dork if you like them without even giving them a chance, so then I get defensive and I'm like "no seriously, just listen to their new stuff!". But the fact does remain that MON is one of my favorite CDs to turn on during the summer and blast. It's so much fun

Every year, my music department does a Chamber concert, and all the small groups pick and prepare a piece. I think I have my partners convinced to do Mmmbop with me! Yes, we are all girls. Yes, it will be hysterical. I'm really excited!

I do believe I have just found what will be my wedding song when that time comes.
SO SO SO freaking gorgeous. Like wow. I cannot get over how amazing it is when it's just Tay and a piano, and he just... sings. *sigh*
Oh and also, if anyone has not heard/seen the acoustic version of Crazy Beautiful, it's unbelievable:

it's like... a religious experience to watch that man do that song. Same with Zac doing Broken Angel, but.. there's not actually a legal video of him doing it so I can't post lol. But if you youtube "Zac Hanson Broken Angel" you'll see

They look like they reversed ages. Isaac looks oldest followed by Taylor, and Zac looks youngest.
Weird.
