The real issue is that Purell is a scam and will not protect you from anything.
I find the Chicago Elevated and Subway system combined with a bus a very convenient, cheap and easy way to commute. However, I do have a little claustrophobia and often find it very confining.

Posted: 7/14/05 at 9:24amYes, the subway is indeed the cheapest and most efficient way to travel in NYC. AND it can be really dirty, smelly and quite unpleasant when the cars smell like urine or vomit or the homeless guy barges into your car shouting at everyone or bursting into song and trying to get money from everyone. I can relate to a fear of homeless people. In Chicago, aggressive homeless people have become quite a problem. On more than one occasion, if I have not given them money, they follow me down the street for blocks yelling at me or in some cases, running in front of me and blocking my path to yell at me. One time, with a couple of friends, one crazy guy selling his Street Wise newspaper in Boystown DEMANDED money from us and blocked us on the sidewalk and stood there screaming at us following us everywhere. I finally had to walk out into traffic to cross the street to get away. Thinking the subway is dirty and being afraid of some homeless people is NOT necessarily classless or intolerant. After riding subways in Madrid, Barcelona, London, Berlin and Hamburg, I think, "Why can't we be this clean?" The truth is, we often don't care.

Liam, if the subways and homeless people of New York City bother you, then why don't you stay in the rarified suburb of Connecticut?
Perhaps your sister could attach you so a tether so you don't wander very far from the country club where your parents are always getting potted.
How can you complain about the homeless people in NYC when you claim to love Ireland so much? Poverty was obvious in Dublin--and it was pretty grubby-looking, too.

Is Liam mlop?
I don't mind the subways - it's the music there I can't stand.
Invasive and obnoxious and usually VERY LOUD.

The various topics raised by this thread are a veritable buffet! I'll ignore the delicious looking entitlement and intolerance stews and just concentrate on the Germophobes.
Purell and the like makes you SICKER, not healthier. The abundance of anti-baterial soaps, lotions and particularly waterless hand cleaners means that the average person encounters fewer bacteria now, so their immune systems relax and become less efficient. Then, since you can't avoid ALL pathogens, you will be more likely to be sickened by the ones you do encounter.
This phenomenon is becoming particularly obvious in school children, who, in years past, entered school having encountered a healthy array of germs in their formative years. Now, school age children are succumbing to more infections, colds, sore throats and the like, not because they are encountering MORE germs, but less. Add to this the growth of antiobiotic-resistant microbes due to over-prescription of pennicillin and the like and you have a coming health crisis.
Moral of the story: Don't make yourself crazy using all the germ killers and you'll make yourself healthier. And quit your bitching about the subway: Public transit GOOD.

Posted: 7/14/05 at 4:02pmI love the subway in NYC. WE have a monorail here in Seattle. It is lame and pointless. It goes from point A to point B. I do enjoy riding it to watch the people realize that it doesn't go where they wanted it to go.

Joe, I love you.
Let us all pray:
That the germs we encounter make us all stronger,
That the homless we encounter make us all grateful,
That the Subways that we ride delilver us safely,
That people who need help encounter those willing to do so.
Amen.

I don't understand why there is such a dramatic reaction to Liam's understandable reaction to the subways. For a kid who lives in a nice, quaint little town upstate to then come into a huge city like NY, take the subway, and be a little surprised about the grime and amount of homeless people in them is perfectly understandable.
When I used to not live in NYC and I would go down every once in a while with my parents (when I was Liam's age and younger,) homeless people scared me too. You just don't know what to expect.
So for some of to react as if Liam had just denounced your lord and saviour seems to be really dramatic and unnecessary. He said homeless people scare him....does that really merit nasty responses from everyone? No - it's a perfectly legitimate statement to make. He didn't say homeless people deserve to die because they are worthless, he said they scare him. I don't see the controversy.
Some of you really need to get over yourselves.

I'm well aware of his age - I'm the only one from the boards that actually knows him personally, remember?
But still, people are acting as if Liam said something evil and blasphemous.
What it really comes down to is who posted it. Since it was Liam, he's an easy target for many. If Liam had said "The subways are glorious and I love homeless people," people would complain about something he said there. It's just irritating.
