Posted: 7/13/05 at 10:15pmYou should definitely bath in Purell when you come out. Which should be just about any day now.

Posted: 7/13/05 at 10:17pmI'm sorry but as a Los Angelino I hate when NYers complain about the subway. AT LEAST YOU HAVE A SEMI EFFICIANT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM!!! I adored the subway system when I was there over the holidays.

Amen to Popular--try taking the bus, or worse, driving

As someone who forutnately stopped taking NYC public transportation (the subway) to work 3 years ago, I can say that when I have to ride the subway it appears more and more unsanitary.
We all know that the majority of germs and infections are spread through the hands.
Touch a support rail, sit in a seat....Think about the other people who have been touching the same rail or sitting in the same seat before you. You touch it, you then take your hands and touch all your clothes, you touch your skin, you put your hands in your mouth or on your lips, the spread of germs is endless.
When I ride the subway I always try to ride without touching anything. It makes for an interesting trip.
Is God telline me something when the homeless always seem to bump into me in a subway car?
Edit...damn! my typos were awful in this thread.

Half of the "homeless" people on the subway carry cell phones. It is a business.
I loved the subway system. My first experience with it was in May.
I also took a train (Harlem line) out of Grand Central, which was exciting.

Some of the homeless make a very good living, living as homeless in the NYC subway system.
Some are know to have 2nd homes for the off seasons.

I love the subway. (Well minus the rare and occasional exhibitionist.) Feeding the homeless is fun. (Though it's always the one's that don't have teeth to chew my granola bars that ask specifically for food...:/...I must bring apple sauce!) :sigh: Though I really wish there was somewhere they could go. (Don't start w/ the shelter business.)
I must say I am anal retentive. I do have my hand sanitizer and I just try not to touch anything I don't need to on the train. What I really hate is rubbing shoulders with someone who is sweaty or needs to exfoliate. Accccck.

a couple of things become obvious
Liam, you are a child who has less class than all homeless people I have met. Better learn a little tolerance if you want to live on this planet
Also, when I have been in NYV I have found the subways clean, and fine........perhaps not as nice as Munich, Vienna, Paris..and even London....but definately fine.

Over 5 million people take the NYC subways everyday (including lots of rich and famous folks I've seen on there who could well-afford to have a personal chauffer around the city). It runs 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year, the cars are generally well-air-conditioned (sometimes TOO well) and despite the occasional fire, suicide, and signal problem, for $2 a trip it is a marvel of efficiency. Is it pristinely clean like the Disneyworld monorail at all times? No, and neither should anyone expect it to be. It does its job and keeps the city moving.
And a little Purell is a very small price to pay to be able to use a system that can get you from point A to Point B faster (and cheaper) in this crazy city than any other means of transportation.
