I know, a lot of you have heard me complain a LOT about my difficulities with the activity of pill swallowing. I know how to do it, and I try, but I guess I just think about it too much because it never goes down. I swallow the water, and the stupid pill ends up on the tip of my tongue or something. Yesterday it took me one and a half 32 ounce bottles of water and about an hour (I'm being totally serious) to swallow one. Help!
I've already gotten a few, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this easier, I'll love you forever.

well, when I was younger my mom would smash up the pills and put the powder in some apple juice... it would at least save you some time.
I feel your pain though I used to have difficulty too. Now I have to take two a day everyday so I learned quickly... just takes time. and you gotta make sure the pill doesn't stick to your tong! that could be part of your problem because it should catch the water and just go right down...

Posted: 3/27/05 at 2:48pmI used to have problems with this for years until i found the perfect solution - I simply eat it with yogurt! I swear, I put the pill in the yogurt, then eat it normally...Since you don't chew yogurt, do you? I always works, and you can hardly feel the pill going down. It's great!

Posted: 3/27/05 at 2:49pmI have the same problem and the other day I was at my grandma's house and she was taking her medication and she had a handful of pills and swallowed all 6 or 7 at once. Cut to me trying to swallow one vitamin yesterday and choking on it.

Actually, soy yogurt exists, I just have to get some. I think I have applesauce in my fridge. I was planning on crushing them, but something I read says not to crush this. In all honesty, the medicine is still getting ingested if I crush the pill, so I don't know what the difference is. *sigh*

*hugs* Emcee, chica, I used to have that problem. Try putting the pill on the back of your tongue before you swallow. (or just stare at your avatar for awhile, that'll make you feel better. 
)

I do. And then it just ends up on the tip of my tongue instead. It's eeeeeeevil.

Posted: 3/27/05 at 3:05pmTry having the water in your mouth before putting the pill in, then swallowing the whole mouthful. That's what my dad taught me to do when I was little and I've never had to do it any other way.

Posted: 3/27/05 at 3:38pmI have the same problem too. Sometimes, if the problem is that the pills are too big, I cutt them into smaller pieces. The only problem is, you have to make sure you're no grinding them into powder, and then losing some pieces. Good luck.

That's what I did this time. I cut it into small-ish pieces and stuck in in applesauce.
Then I almost choked.

*hugs* i'm so proud of you for doing this, because you know that i'm too much of a wuss even to try. i have to take liquid or chewable everything. i refuse to crush things up because they taste gross. but luckily i'm rarely sick so it all works out

Posted: 3/27/05 at 4:09pmMy sister's 19, and has resigned herself to never being able to swallow pills. She's tried pretty much everything. Though, she says it's still quite embarrassing to ask for children's chewables or liquid form.

Posted: 3/27/05 at 4:14pmMy sister has this problem. Sorry I don't have any new suggestions, but I do know that you should check with your doctor before crushing or breaking up the pills because doing so could mess up how the medicine is released...

Well, I'm *supposed* to take half a pill a day, so I have to break them anyway. That's why I think it might be okay, but I'll check.
I usually do resort to liquid and chewable, Ga, but it would've taken longer to get.

I have the opposite problem. I cannot stand chewables or liquid. Once I could only get my Singulair Rx in chewable form. Ugh. Too bad breathing is so neccessary; otherwise I wouldn't have touched them.
If you already have to break them in half, it's probably okay. I just know some meds are weird about time release. Good luck!

Posted: 3/27/05 at 4:48pmIf the pill is scored NOT enteric coated or states a long /slow release it is usually, safe to cut or crush. Try using a slighly thicker consistancy- frozen youghut is good so are thick milkshake y things

Posted: 3/27/05 at 5:06pmI totally understand your frustration. I even have this little pill crusher thingie my mom bought for me back when Thrifty pharmacy's were still in business here in SF. You should buy one, you pop the pills in and turn the little knob...crushes them to soft powder. Just watch out if you have to sneeze or cough, you'll end up blowing the stuff everywhere! It's happened to me a couple of times.
