thank you for your concern

enough of you have PMed or emailed me in regards to the fires here. We are ok. The fires are in Cabazon, maybe a 20 minute drive down the freeway where the big outlet mall is. It is also a reservation for one of the tribes.
We were able to see the smoke, and the color in the sky......4 firefighters dead, and apparently arson......just horrible

Oh my God, that is horrible! Being here in Podunk, I didn't realize the wildfires were so bad there. I'm at least glad that you guys are safe, but that doesn't say much for the people who really are affected! My thought and prayers are now with everyone in the region.
And no one grew into anything new, we just became the worst of what we were."

Elphaba, the name of that place made me smile because in Spanish "cabezon" refers to someone with a big head. I know it's not the same spelling (save one letter), but that's what it looked like to me at first glance. It didn't seem improbable to me because in Florida you have Boca Raton, which translates as "Mouth of the Big Rat."

Anyway, I'm glad you're okay. re: thank you for your concern

re: thank you for your concern

It was frightening the way it spread so quickly - 10,ooo acres in 12 hours. And the 100 foot wall of flame that engulfed the fire truck - unimaginable.

We were just out that way, and it all was SO dry - obviously.

Glad you're ok, Elph. Goodness knows our thoughts and prayers are with some families tonight. This is why we contribute to the Firefighter's Fund.

re: thank you for your concern

It's the deadliest wildfire firefighting disaster in the United States since July 10, 2001, when four firefighters were killed in Washington's Okanogan National Forest.

I hope they get who did it.......I hope they throw the idiot in jail.
We were coming back from Idyllwild one time, and were coming down the mountain, and could see a tongue of fire leap across the valley floor towards Banning HS....we beat the flames, but it was a bit harried for a moment. When it's dry, they spread SO fast

Screw jail. Try castration.

Stay safe, Elphaba!

re: thank you for your concern

I've been following the story closely, so I knew the fires were still a good ways distant from you, Elphaba, or I would have PM'ed. I'm just so angry that some moron arsonist murderer might get away with this! 4 firefighters dead, and the 5th barely hanging on, with burns to over 90% of his body. And it is - by all accounts - the worst way to die. My prayers are with all of those brave men and their families.

re: thank you for your concern

it's really terrible for the town of Idyllwild, one of my fav places on the planet up in the mountains. The ranger fire station is slightly north of them, and everyone knows everyone, and the sadness there today is horrid.

Steve did point out today that the fire started exactly where the other one did that we passed months ago.....a very dry area, of course this one was arson.

I'm with sorry...castrate the SOB(s) that started the fire

I know people may think I'm being facetious, but I really do think castration should be an option. This is murder and prison is too good for whoever did this.

re: thank you for your concern

now it's getting a bit weird.......I went out side, and you can now see smoke creeping over the mountains......very strange almost looks foglike. I had heard the fires were moving towards here, but no way can they come this far as so much between here and there is barren......it just looks odd.....

re: thank you for your concern

Wow, I've been so wrapped up in my own junk the last 24 hours I haven't even turned the news on.

Scott, I'm glad to hear that you and Steve are okay!

This is such a sad and infuriating story.

I have a better idea. Let's have all the people affected by the fire get together in a stadium and stone who ever started the fires!

re: thank you for your concern

I woke up this morning and there was ash on my driveway, you can't walk outside without having smoke all around yo, and the sky looks orange. AND I live about two hours away from the fire (San Diego)!

re: thank you for your concern

Unfortunately, this isn't going to go away anytime soon. I live about 45 minutes away, and the smoke/ash were so bad, we were actually on "Rainy Day Schedule" today. Many of my students with asthma issues had to go home early, even though we were inside all day.

Once the Santa Ana winds die down, the containment will be quicker, but that's still several days away. I'll keep praying for the families of the lost firefighters and for the idiot that started this mess to come forward.

Whoa, I missed this thread.

Hope you are doing okay, Elphaba.

Yikes.

Not Idyllwild, I love Idyllwild.

Elphaba....near Rancho Santa Margarita...on the other side of Saddleback mountain from where you are. There is another fire off Ortega, so we're getting socked in with smoke from two directions.
