not,
not all visitors fall into the category though. since you are self aware enough to say that you are most likely very welcome in my fair city! :)

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

*bows back*
Sounds like you will do fine here! Have a great time!
Just don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk and ask if the large building is the Empire State or take photographs in theatres...grrr DRS today was flash city at the end of Dirty Rotten Number and I was angry.
I expect you would never do that stuff so enjoy! :)

hot... they help the economies of our lovely cities, even when some of them can be quite annoying. Remember... hopefully we're all tourists, and the truth is you probably can't tell 1/2 the people that are tourists, only notice the "bad" ones.

Let me state, there is a difference between "visitors" and "tourists," at least in my opinion:

VISITORS come to a place (example - NYC) knowing a bit about it and wanting to explore, they know how to read maps and schedules and such and are pretty much self-sufficient.
TOURISTS are generally clueless, do little to no research and are pretty much helpless and prone to asking stupid questions.

For example, in NY, a VISITOR would go to TKTS to buy their ticket for their show, go to a cafe they read about and read a map to get there. A TOURIST would bug random people on the street - "where can you get tickets to, you know, like, shows and stuff?" and would then proceed to go to the first eatery they see for dinner and complain about the prices, loudly proclaiming how much cheaper things are in Iowa/Nebraska/Ohio.

So, out-of-town visitors: Hot.
Tourists: Not.

It's called people who plan vs. people who don't, and people who are rude vs. people who aren't. The latter, especially, has nothing to do with whether or not you're from the city. I've always been sure that a lot of the inconsiderate behavior people ascribe to tourists is displayed by city dwellers as well. It's just easier to assume that the asshole putting his feet on the stage at a show is from Peoria rather than Brooklyn.

It's always the folks from Brooklyn!. Or, The Bronx, Queens, Richmond and Jersey.

Manhattanites learn early never to be rude, inconsiderate or discourteous.

as a frequent tourist (as in not from the city, going to have a good time, BUT don't ask stupid questions unless i REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY have to), i apologize for any stupid behavior by annoying tourists.

i always try to appear as un-tourist as possible, and act respectfully toward the people who truly know where they're going. because sometimes, i just don't! but in those situations, i figure if i walk for a little bit i'll figure something out, and i always do!

but - if you ever come to vermont on a leaf-peeping tour, please don't be annoying. don't stand in the middle of my road and take pictures and refuse to move when i'm really just trying to get home. the worst is when people are in montpelier (the state capital) standing IN FRONT of the statehouse (kinda unmistakable, has a GIANT GOLD DOME!) and ask "honey, where's montpelier? we thought we were followin' the right road but this town is so smaaaaallllllllll!" yes, montpelier is small. AHHHHHHH!! it's so annoying. it's always really really old people too.

People that are OBVIOUS tourists: NOT

My friends and I make fun of them in DC, because anyone that wears an FBI t-shirt and Tevas is fair game.

I would say tourists are hot for the economy and not when they bug the h*** out of you - like stoping dead in the middle of the sidewalk, or not moving fast enough, or being rude and pushy.

I guess I'd be classified as a visitor because I try to blend in as opposed to sticking out like a sore thumb :) I do extensive research when I travel anywhere, including learning as much as I can about local customs and do's and dont's and try to avoid doing anything to make stupid "tourist" mistakes. I have my maps and directions and whatnot, but I study them BEFORE I set foot anywhere - it's just me. The first time I visited NYC (last year), I even went so far as to obtain an overnight parking permit in a park and ride lot in case I couldn't get back to the lot before midnight.

it's only, I travel extensively, and let me say that I have met the most interesting people simply by just unfolding a map.
Nothing wrong with opening a map kiddo.........
in fact whenever I am lonely on a trip, I simply unfold a map, and 'VOILA" instant friends.........but I agree with blending in......I HATE when I see people wearing American flag shirts......or the one I REALLY hate....the U of Michigan sweatshirt....ARRGH!

lol - I do open maps in public too, on occasion - and I do ask for directions. I try to be respectful and polite and not pushy, epsecially when I'm in another city, state or country. I used to live in Florida and loved to go to Disney. I could spend hours there just people-watching. I was fond of the families that had about 20 people or so and they'd all wear the same shirt!!! Nothing wrong with that, except it would crack me up.

I say not, only because I'm really more of a visitor since I live close and go to NYC at least once a month.
