tourists in Times Square

why are tourists so funny? Passing through Times Square last night, yes, it was chilly and thewind was a bit piercing, but full on parkas and scrafs and heavy duty ankelt length snow jackets? I think there was no need.. It was quite funny though. And I can't frget the tourists at the hotdog cart getting excited over a "real new york hot dog"...

on a side note - i love starbucks hot chocolate and thank you virgin mega for my brand new copy of the wizard of oz starring jessica grove - I needed a new one.

another side note, the broadway theare looks very desolate and cold with nothing on the marquee.....

Yeah BG2, I thought you were not a native either.

Some us from the sticks are just giddy to be in the bright lights. Please forgive our less than sophisticated demeanor. re: tourists in Times Square

Well good for you BG2...

However, it seems like you are a little too fresh to be passing judgement on 'tourists'. I'm sure there are many veteran NYers who see you as a bumpkin. It wasn't too many moons ago that you were yearning to even experience the delight that you are now mocking.

Come to NYC! But if you want to stop and look at all the pretty lights, get out of the middle of the sidewalk!

What is it about you
You're big
You're loud
You're tough NYC
I go years without you
Then I
Can't get
Enough
Enough of the cab drivers answering back
In the language far from pure
Enough of frankfurters answering back
Brother, you know you're in NYC
Too busy
Too crazy
Too hot
Too cold
Too late
I'm sold
Again
On NYC...

re: tourists in Times Square

The one thing that bugs me about tourists in TS is the way they slow down everything. There is so much to look at in the sky now that Johnny Yokel walks with his head up and slow as sh!t. So either you're slowed to a crawl or being the typical rude new yorker and pushin mothertruckers outta your way.

The thing that caught my eye at TS was the enormous Toys R Us. I've never seen a toy store that big before.

re: tourists in Times Square

Well seeing that Time Square is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, what do you expect? Of course they're going to stop and look at their surroundings and take pictures because it is normally a rare occasion that they get to see Time Square. Of course they should follow some common sense sometimes, but thats besides the point..re: tourists in Times Square

re: tourists in Times Square

I was born in NYC and lived there for a while but I live in Atlanta now (definetly not my choice) but a few weeks ago I went to NYC with a bunch of people who had never been before (I've been back many times). It was so funny to watch them gawk over TS and stuff. They were all so touristy. I will definetly live there again someday though.

re: tourists in Times Square

I would rather see a bunch of funny tourists take the time to slow down and appreciate this beloved city for all its sights than see a jaded traveller who is completely blind to what it has to offer. Times Square is congested, period. The fact that there's so many of you on here who can comment on said tourists show that it's not just the tourists but the locals who are taking up space the sidewalks and streets. And I'm plenty sure there are many locals who stop in the middle of the sidewalk to gab and loiter. So even though I'm going to relocate to New York in the next few years, every time I travel there, I will continue to stop and beam when I see the bright lights of Times Square (albeit not in the middle of the sidewalk, because that's just rude) and remember that I'm the funny person who's helping to fuel your economy.

re: tourists in Times Square

And why is it always assumed that the people walking slowly are tourists? Plenty of them could very well be natives- they're not checking maps or gawking at the lights but just strolling because they feel like it.

re: tourists in Times Square

I think Times Square is one of the major shock and awes of NYC. It's very nice for tourists and those new to the city, but having been here for sometime, I avoid it. That is, unless I'm showing friends around, seeing a show, just wanting to walk through, etc. If I'm in a hurry, I walk either 8th Ave or through the hotels (the alleys/passageways). I know many of the Broadway actors do the same, because I always pass a lot them. It's a nice way to be in the Times Square area, but not among the shoppers and gawkers.
