I think more than "tourists in general" what bothers me about folks in Times Square (particularly when the weather gets nice) is when the Naked Cowboy, the silver man, and whatever novelty artist or musician takes up camp in TS and HUGE blocks of people just gather around en masse. That irks the hell out of me, especially when I'm running late (which I usually am). It's one thing when a few scattered people are stopped to look at the billboards or what have you, but when a mob of people his camped out looking at some oddity and there's no moving them...ARG!
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)
Aah! I can't can't stand the Naked Cowboy. Must he stand right in the middle of Broadway? People are trying to cross the street and they only have a few seconds to do it. Argh.
ohh, but tourists LOVE the nakes cowboy. it cracks me up!
i have to say, that other than the fact that they walk SOOOO SLOW, tourists amuse me. and for the most part, i love being able to help people find places around the area. they get so excited!
i have had nasty experiences with them, however. like, last week, passing through the gershwin outside lobby area, a woman walked out of the revolving door, right into me. i was walking reasonably fast, but said "excuse me" and the woman had the nerve to say (in her VERY mid-western accent) "clearly she's from new york! no consideration for anyone that's not from around here!"
i just kept walking, but in my head, i was just thinking "whaaaaaat??!"
I think New Yorkers are actually pretty friendly, despite the common stereotypes. Most people are willing to help out, they chat, if you go to a sporting event, or stand in line for a show with other locals, or are in a shop and start talking, people are pretty ammenable to having a conversation. Hell, look at all of us NYers on this board- we're all very friendly!
i bike to work every day through Times Square. There's no funnier sight than a fat-assed mama from DesMoine gasping as she quickly waddles onto the sidewalk to avoid being hit. It's my own shooting gallery, every day.
hehe of topic, but...Aigoo, I live a few minutes from Schaumburg. Just thought I'd share.
And my cousin goes to U of I...I'll be going to his graduation in may (i think).

OK I am not a local, but sure as heck am not a tourist. While in the City I do everything humanly possible to avoid TS.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

The Naked Cowboy confuses me. First of all, he's not naked. Not that I'd want him to be, but seriously, that's false advertising. Second of all, what possessed him to show up in his underwear in TS one day with his guitar? Did he realize he'd become this phenomenom, or was that just an added bonus to publicly making a fool of himself? Also, what does he do when he goes home at night? Does he even have a real job? I can't imagine being an oddity is a lucrative career.

Why thank you! I love those naughty pets! I LOVE the idea of a big billboard of it!!! Speaking of lovin' on TS billboards, does anyone remember the Swatch one w/ the cartoon bunnies going at it?!?!? Good times!

Yeah, I had to pull an obnoxious tourist moment and stop to get a picture of that! "Goin at it like a bunch of rabbits" indeed!

Yeah, no one's ever heard of St. Charles. It's a pretty upscale neighborhood. It's about....30 minutes down the road (literally) from Aurora, and a couple minutes from Elgin. Those names might be more common.
You're a sweet, lovable creature...but ya gots A LOT of time to put in here before you can really take on the tourists.
They say it takes 10 years of living here before someone can consider themselves a true New Yorker. I'm am at year 9 and because both of my parents are from Harlem East, I'm pretty sure I'm grandfathered in.
